When you first listen to the tune of "Late Autumn", you will feel familiar, especially when it is sung in Cantonese, it has a distinct Hong Kong flavor, similar to the love songs of Leslie Cheung, Luo Man and others.
It can be said that the author was influenced by Hong Kong pop music to a certain extent, so Huang Kaiqin performed it with ease and without any barriers. As a Cantonese song, it has the same Cantonese cultural background as Hong Kong pop songs, and the tune has the charm of Cantonese opera.
Creative Background
"Late Autumn" was originally called "May You Keep My Heart". It was written and composed by Xu Jianqiang and sung by Chen Rujia. This song is the second song composed by Xu Jianqiang. It was written in 15 minutes. After its release in 1988, the original song won the Top Ten Golden Melody Award on the Pearl River Economic Radio's "Music Shockwave" list.
In 1989, Xu Jianqiang went to Jiangmen to perform with the Pacific Arts Troupe. Huang Kaiqin also attended the event as a Hong Kong representative. When Xu Jianqiang was rehearsing "May You Keep My Heart" with the band, he happened to be met by Huang Kaiqin. Afterwards, Huang Kaiqin's company negotiated with Xu Jianqiang and bought out the overseas copyright of the song, and then handed it over to Hong Kong Feitu Records for re-arrangement. It was eventually renamed "Late Autumn".
