There is a big difference between rock lighting and lighting for drama and other performances. Rock lighting mainly expresses the atmosphere of the song and drives the audience's emotions, but has little effect on expressing the actor's state, and most of the lamps are modern computer lamps.
So rock lighting should be based on songs. The three elements of music are melody, rhythm and harmony, so we can start with these. In terms of melody, lighting is actually more based on the structure of the song. The melody changes in different sections such as verse, chorus, bridge, solo, etc., and a different cue can be compiled for each section but echoes the whole. When the song progresses to different sections Cutting into different scenes in time; in terms of rhythm, the lighting engineer needs to stick to the rhythm when switching scenes, and rock lighting often renders the atmosphere with the rapid on/off of a scene, and a good sense of rhythm is even more needed at this time (even You can practice with a metronome~), for example, in the most basic "move major time", you can turn on the light when the bass/snare drum sounds, turn off the light when hihat, and even use it when filling-in each section. Strobe to enhance, this can explain that many lighting seniors I know are drummers; for the last point of harmony, I personally have less reference, after all, most songs have many harmonic changes in each section.
Above, understanding music is very important for rock lighting. I still remember this time I watched Justice in Strawberry (although they were electronic). The number of cues used by the lighting engineer was not many, but it was due to the familiarity with the songs and the The precise rhythm turns the entire outdoor scene into a nightclub party~! Of course, it would be better if you are a musician with performance experience, because if you understand your own needs on the stage, you will not blind the lead vocal when dimming (P.S. except for revenge~!).
Beyond music, understanding the use of colors, optics, electrical machinery, etc. are all very important, but I don’t want to make a fool of myself because I know so little about it~
As an aside, to be a lighting engineer, you must be in good health. For the sound part of the performance, you may start soundchecking during the day, but the lighting is only effective when it is dark, and it is common to do it until early in the morning or even all night long~
The above, ***Mian~
