It is said that "Wenchang Dadong Immortal Sutra" was created in the Wuzi year of Qiandao in the Southern Song Dynasty. "Tai Shang Wu Ji Zong Zhen Wenchang Dadong Immortal Sutra", referred to as "Wenchang Dadong Immortal Sutra", is one of the Taoist versions of "Dadong Sutra". The five volumes of the original sutra are included in the text genre of the Dongzhen Book of "Tao Zang".
The first two volumes of the sutra mainly describe the experience and virtues of the Reborn Eternal Life God (i.e. Emperor Wenchang); the sutra was written by Liu Ansheng from Pengxi, Sichuan in the Southern Song Dynasty. The chapters and sentences are taken from the thirty-nine chapters of the "Shangqing Dadong Zhenjing" and some chapters of "Lingbao Salvation Sutra", and are synthesized by additions, deletions, changes and alterations. The purpose of this book is to save life and death, eliminate disasters and prolong life. It emphasizes fasting and chanting sutras, doing good deeds and accumulating virtue as the key to spiritual practice, and advises people to keep their duties. It is actually one of the Taoist good deeds in the Song and Yuan Dynasties.
