Dongjing ancient music of Bai ethnic group was originally a kind of Taoist music. It was introduced to the southwest from the mainland during the Ming Dynasty. Subsequently, during the long historical evolution, this Taoist music was slowly accepted by the ethnic minorities in southwest China, and gradually integrated into ethnic music and musical instruments, eventually forming Dongjing ancient music with ethnic minority characteristics.
Weishan Cave Sutra music and Dali Cave Sutra music are two branches of Dong Sutra music. The music of Weishan Cave Sutra incorporates the classical and solemn music of Nanzhao; the music of Dali Cave Sutra incorporates the beauty and melodiousness of Bai folk music. Although there are occasional differences in the timbres, the musical instruments include flutes, gongs, drums, erhus, sanxian, windings, bells, etc. as accompaniments. Bai tune
Bai tune is a tune that Bai people sing casually when singing and dancing. It is sung in Bai dialect and has a strong sense of life.
Chanting tune
Sutra-chanting tune is a tune played by the Bai people when worshiping the Lord and chanting sutras. The main musical instruments are wooden fish, etc. The tunes are solemn and harmonious, appearing ancient and profound. But it is not the same as Dongjing ancient music. There are still certain differences in timbre and melody between the two.
Benziqu
Benziqu is actually a kind of Bai tune, which is divided into solo and duet. When singing solo, in addition to the first paragraph, the second paragraph is often repeated indefinitely, with only slight adjustments in rhythm and emotion; when singing in duet, each person performs eight lines and repeats it repeatedly.
Chuchui tune
Chuchui tune, commonly known as "Bench Opera", is one of the ancient operas of the Bai ethnic group. The Chui Chui tune is bounded by Dali. The area south of Dali is called the Southern School, and the area north of Dali is called the Northern School. Both styles have their own characteristics. Chui Chui tune pays attention to rhythm, has various styles, vivid performances and strong local color.
Dabenqu
Dabenqu, also known as Benziqu, is a unique folk rap art of the Bai ethnic group. This piece of music is often sung by one person, accompanied by one person playing the three-stringed instrument. The lyrics are mostly Bai folk tales and Han literary works, such as "The Story of the Bai King", "Brother Lan Jizihui", "Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai", etc. During the development process, Benziqu gradually formed Southern, Northern and Haidong accents. The southern accent is tactful and soft, the northern accent is straight and smooth, and the thirteenth accent is high-pitched and rough. Tie-dye
Tie-dye is a traditional craft of the Bai people with a long history. Use a wax knife to apply wax on the homespun cloth, then tie it with cotton cloth in different parts of the homespun cloth, and then dip it in dye. After drying, remove the tied cotton cloth, and there will be tie marks with different patterns on the homespun cloth. Since different binding parts of the cotton fabric will produce different patterns, tie-dyeing techniques are diverse and endlessly changing. There are a wide range of products made from tie-dyed homespun cloth, such as tablecloths, door curtains, clothing, ethnic bags, hats, etc.
Jianchuan Wood Carving
Jianchuan Wood Carving has fine workmanship, diverse shapes, vivid and beautiful images, and is hard and flexible in texture. It can be said to be the essence of various wood carvings in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Rao San Ling takes place every year from the 23rd to the 25th of April in the lunar calendar. The festival around Sanling lasts for three days. During the festival on the 23rd, people gathered at Shengyuan Temple at the foot of Wutai Peak in Cangshan Mountain to pray and sing songs; on the 24th, people passed through Xizhou Town and headed for the villages near Nan'erhai Sea. On the 25th, the crowd went along the Erhai Lake to the Majiu Yi Benzhu Temple east of Chongsheng Temple in Dali, where they prayed and returned home after celebrating.
March Street, also known as Guanyin City, falls from the 15th to the 21st of the third lunar month every year. March Street is the grandest traditional festival of the Bai people. It is not only a grand gathering of material exchanges, but also the center of various cultural and sports performances such as horse racing, Yunnan opera, and lanterns.
The Shibaoshan Antiphonal Singing Festival is held every year from the 26th of the seventh lunar month to the first day of August. The Bai elders believe that singing on Shibaoshan on that day can bring good luck and good health. Therefore, on the day of the festival, people around Many Bai ethnic groups will gather from all directions at Shibao Mountain in Jianchuan, Dali, to sing antiphonal songs and go sightseeing.
Haihaihui, also known as: Corpse Retrieving Festival. The festival starts on the 23rd day of the seventh lunar month in the Shangguan and Xizhou areas, and starts in the eighth day of the eighth lunar month in the Dali and Xiaguan areas. People of the Bai ethnic group dressed in costumes gathered on the banks of the Erhai Lake, took colorful boats to swim around the Erhai Lake, sang folk songs and played tunes. Grand dragon boat competitions will also be held in Dali and Xiaguan areas.
