Shenyang Conservatory of Music is the only higher music and dance art institution with a long history and glorious tradition in Northeast China colleges. The academy originated from the Lu Xun Academy of Art initiated and founded in Yan'an in 1938 by Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Lin Boqu, Xu Teli, Cheng Fangwu, Ai Siqi, Zhou Yang and other older generation proletarian revolutionaries. In 1940, it was renamed Lu Xun Academy of Arts and Letters. . After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, the college moved from Yan'an to Northeast China. At the end of 1948, it was located in Shenyang and was renamed Northeast Lu Xun College of Literature and Art. In 1953, the Northeast Music College was established on the basis of the music department of the college. In 1958, it was officially renamed Shenyang Conservatory of Music and enrolled students nationwide.

Since its establishment, the college has continued to grow and develop, and has initially formed a school-running structure with the main campus as the center and the South Campus, Taoxian Campus, and Dalian Campus as the supports.
