The history and origin of eye exercises
Moderator: The interview has officially begun. The first question is for Director Cui. I would like to ask about the history and origin of the popularization of eye exercises in schools, because in the previous chat, you told me that you have participated in some work related to eye exercises.
Cui Yixiang: In fact, the promotion process of eye exercises happened in 1963 and 1964 of the last century. I happened to be a person at the time when eye exercises were done. At that time, eye exercises were just emerging in Beijing. I haven’t noticed the origin and development of eye exercises, but later on, when I got involved in this issue due to work reasons, I learned that the origin of eye exercises was a physical education teacher named Liu at Beijing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Gao Quan: Liu Zhiming (same pronunciation).
Cui Yixiang: During the teaching process, he has done a lot of research on meridians, massage, and traditional Chinese medicine. It seems that his eyesight is not good because of surgery. Based on his own experience, he compiled a set of eye exercises and did them himself. In the process of doing them, his eyesight also improved. Later, he summarized his experience and launched a ten-session eye exercise, which was later announced to Beijing. In the Evening Standard and other newspapers.
Gao Quan: Let me add that in 1963, because the National Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education had proposed to protect students’ eyesight, Teacher Liu attached great importance to research in this area. At that time, he was led by Beijing Medical College Teacher Liu from the Physical Education and Research Office, Director Yu Fengzhu, the old director of the Beijing Health and Epidemic Prevention Station, and an ophthalmologist from Guang'an Hospital developed a set of eye exercises, which later evolved into the five-part eye exercises that are still implemented in schools today. The five moral ethics are still used in the northern region. The southern region is slightly different, which is the first quarter. It is based on the meridian theory of traditional Chinese medicine and the principles of massage therapy.
Cui Yixiang: In 1984 and 1985, Beijing promoted eye exercises and moved part of the role of science popularization to the then Beijing Health Education Institute. At that time, we had an editor named Bi Xiaoman (homophone) , took this to find Professor Gao Xiaolou (tongren) of Tongren Hospital. Because before this, it was traditional Chinese medicine experts who demonstrated scientific medicine, but Bi Xiaoman took the things to find Professor Gao Xiaolou. Professor Gao Xiaolou wrote an inscription and said that eye exercises are very good and worth promoting. Because of time, that thing was later lost. Later, in the early 1990s, the School Health Department of the Beijing Health and Epidemic Prevention Station told me about the implementation process. In the past, there were music, tapes, and records, but records were very inconvenient. Can they be made into suitable tapes? School communication. Later I took over the task.
Cui Yixiang: After taking over the task, I first found Professor Li Fengming, who was then the Third Hospital of Peking University. After reading the information, he also agreed very much, appreciated the eye exercises, and even wrote an inscription for us. Now we have There is also an inscription by Teacher Li Fuming on the eye care wall chart of our school. The band we played on was a musician from the Coal Mine Art Troupe, and they made the band together with us. Later, it evolved into the Five Section Exercises. However, due to the time limit for doing eye exercises and the stretching relationship of the music, the students paid more attention, so they put overlooking and relaxation in the front. It seemed that the sixth section appeared again, but in fact it was still Five sections. This makes it very convenient for schools to do eye exercises. Pressing the button at any time can ensure smooth music for students to do eye exercises. The music is very tactful, very beautiful, and has a very relaxing feeling. This is the result of the joint efforts of Yu Fengzhu, Chen Yongfu, teacher Yan Yongyi from the Education Bureau, and many comrades from the Beijing Health and Epidemic Prevention Station.
