The ancient Ainu held a Salmon Festival in autumn to celebrate the return of salmon. Today, this festival is still celebrated in many cities in Hokkaido. The festival is full of joyful atmosphere. People sang and danced, and beautiful music resounded through the sky. Visitors can enjoy the live fishing performances performed by the Ainu people, taste fresh and delicious salmon cooked in traditional ways, and see with their own eyes how craftsmen make handicrafts, and buy some as souvenirs of their trip. There are various games and competitions during the festival. One of the games involved people competing to catch slippery salmon with their bare hands.
