"Berceuse Heroique" (Berceuse Heroique) was composed in 1914 when the British writer Hall Kenin commissioned Debussy to compose music for his book. Hall Can's book was written to praise King Abel I of Belgium for his "heroic resistance" to the German invasion during World War I. This piece is first in the alto, in the key of E-flat minor, like a bass prelude with the sound of heavy footsteps, and then moves to a slightly faster speed to express heroic spirit, in which the melody of the Belgian national anthem "The Belgians" also appears.
