Wang Jianzhong

Wang Jianzhong (1933-2016), composer and pianist. His ancestral home is Jiangyin, Jiangsu Province, and he was born in Shanghai. Started learning piano at the age of 10. In 1950, he was admitted to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and studied in the composition department and piano department. After graduating in 1958, he stayed at the school to teach. In the 1970s, he served as a composer of the Central Orchestra. In the 1980s, he returned to his alma mater to teach. He has successively served as associate professor, professor, deputy department director, and deputy dean of the Composition Department of the college. Many of the piano works he created and adapted successfully integrated Chinese folk music with the expression techniques of Western musical instruments.
