Michaelson was born in 1975 in a small town called ?ibenik on the Adria coast of Croatia. He began learning piano at the age of nine and immediately showed his extraordinary talent in piano playing.

In 1993, Michaelson won the Piano Grand Prize at the Zagrab Music Competition. In the following five years, he studied piano performance at the Zagrab Conservatory of Music, and then went to the Liszt Conservatory of Music in Budapest.
