Guan Mucun was born on November 6, 1953, in a Manchu family in Mu Village, Muye Township, a suburb of Xinxiang City, Henan Province. He was named Guan Mucun after the village. In November 1970, he started working and later served as a soloist in the Tianjin Song and Dance Troupe. In 1984, he entered the Vocal Music Department of the Central Conservatory of Music and studied under the vocal educator Professor Shen Xiang. In 1987, he graduated from the Vocal Department of the Central Conservatory of Music.
