Main musical instruments and their applications during the European Renaissance

- Lute (similar to a guitar. Not every string is used to play music. Some strings are used to make noise. This is similar to the Indian sitar.)

- Harpsichord (similar to the piano. The piano strikes the strings, while the harpsichord plucks the strings)

- Recorder

- Viol (evolved into later violin)

Usually in music, there is a harpsichord playing Basso Ostinato. This is the Canon of the Baroque period. in D is most prominent.

The most common musical instrument during this period was the human voice. There is usually a bass viol (evolved into a cello) or a harpsichord, a lute and three or four singers.
