Prologue
Scene: Chaos reigns in the unmarked tomb. It was filled with miserable wind and mist, and felt dark and damp.
Time: several years after the end of the sixth scene
Singing behind the scenes (in the eerie musical background):
(Female voice) Miserable Miserable - (male voice) miserable,
(female voice) sad - (male voice) sad,
(female voice) deserted - (Male voice) Deserted,
(Female voice) Looking for it - (Male voice) Looking for it.
The curtain rises during the singing round.
Silence and darkness. After a while, a figure seemed to be moving, and there was the sound of incomprehensible conversations that were kept as low as possible. As the footsteps got closer, it could be vaguely seen that a man and a woman (Gringou and Simone) were looking for something nervously.
Ge: (whispering) Are you sure? Really here?
West: (whispering) Believe me, that’s right! What the crystal ball indicates is around here.
The two Geshes went back and forth in the dark to search for each other, trying to smooth things over.
Suddenly, Ge hit something under his feet. He screamed desperately and fell to the ground. Xi hurriedly groped over.
Ge: Oh, you scared me to death!
West: (comes up to cover the mouth) Shhh, softly. let me.
Xi Dou fumbled for the fire sickle, lit it once but failed, and only lit it a second time. Xi trembled and leaned forward, while Ge struggled to hold up his upper body and also leaned forward.
The chasing light illuminated the center of the stage, and there was a pair of bones of different shapes hugging each other on the ground.
The fire sickle in Xi's hand fell to the ground, and Ge screamed in terror as he got up and hurried off.
The stage returned to darkness. Only Xi's monologue was heard.
Xi: Look, it’s the two of them! The most beautiful and the ugliest pair of miserable people.
The chorus sounded behind the scenes.
Chorus behind the scenes:
Who knows the beauty, ugliness, good and evil?
The humble and noble show their true colors.
Live in different beds and die in the same acupuncture point,
A drama of joys and sorrows.
The curtain fell with the chorus.
The first scene: Amazing busking
Scene: Notre Dame Square in Paris. The gate of Notre Dame and the tall bell tower can be seen in one corner of the stage, and the execution platform can be seen in the other corner.
Time: Several years before the prologue, at the Carnival.
Chorus behind the scenes:
Parisians came out in full force for the annual carnival.
All kinds of people came on stage,
The streets were noisy.
The curtain rises during the chorus.
There was a constant flow of people coming and going on the stage. There are various juggling practice stalls. There was noisy excitement and noisy atmosphere.
On one side of the execution platform, Grandcourt can be seen mumbling and reciting his newly composed crooked poem; on the other side, Simone can be seen mumbling and selling her business. Some citizens passed by and were curious, while others passed by with disdain.
Ge: Freedom is valuable, and it all comes from equality; freedom is valuable, and it all comes from equality. Freedom is precious, and it all comes from equality. If we want to...find the root cause, we must...fraternity. Yes, yes, yes. Listen to me read it from the beginning: Freedom is precious, and it all comes from equality; if we want to find the root cause again, we must have fraternity.
West: Come on, come on, the crystal ball can tell the past and the future, read palms, and help avoid disasters. Come on, come on, come on, this gentleman...; come on, come on, come on, that lady...
Suddenly someone in the crowd shouted, and the rest of the crowd immediately echoed. At this time, the gate of Notre Dame slowly opened.
People: Look, the bishop is coming out!
Amidst deafening cheers, Claude walked out of the gate of Notre Dame solemnly, followed closely by Quasimodo.
The people cheered in unison again. Claude waved to everyone.
Some people in the crowd knelt down devoutly to pray for God's blessing. Claude solemnly made the sign of the cross and prayed, then cleared his throat and prepared to speak.
Ge and Xi turned white on both sides of the stage at the same time.
Ge: Look what ivory comes out of his donkey’s mouth? !
West: Hey, he’s coming to represent the Father and the Son again.
K: In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen. (Everyone present agreed: Amen) Remember, God does not show favoritism to everyone. Only with fraternity can there be equality; without fraternity, how can there be freedom? Today coincides with Carnival, and I would like to introduce to you a child I have adopted for twenty-five years. Love everyone according to the will of the Lord. See, raising Quasimodo is an example of fraternity!
K pushes the card in front of the crowd.
The people exclaimed: (there was a commotion) Look, how ugly he looks! A hunchback! The facial features are not well developed. I'm so scared! (Such remarks filled the stage, causing a commotion)
K: Be quiet, be quiet!
(singing)
Listen to the teachings of the Holy Father, and
strive to forge spiritual beauty.
Don’t despise being humble and ugly.
The most important thing in life is fraternity.
(Continues) Quasimodo, just twenty-five years ago this evening, someone threw you at the gate of Notre Dame. Come, tell everyone...
Ka (stammering): Yes, yes, yes...Father, I - I am the one who was saved and raised by the bishop...
K: To follow the teachings of the Catholic Church, you must remember the word fraternity. Everyone...
