Before signing the contract with Jingwen, Compass Man's main activity was to promote the image of Hong Kong Anhengli Company, which provided them with rehearsal equipment and venues. The performance area and number of performances were extremely limited.
In p>1995, together with Overload Band, I toured all parts of Zhejiang in a convertible in a purely gypsy way. The enthusiastic response of the audience made the band both gratified and frightened. In the "play" in Shanghai, they witnessed the first three rows of chairs being trampled to the ground in an instant. On other occasions, they met special forces. They feel guilty and sad that they can't face their friends who call the name "Compass Man". But they already know that there are so many people who need to bathe in such music, which may be the only reason why they are not moved by various desires and inducements in the dilemma of life.
The album took one year from the intention of production to the rehearsal and studio, and the real creation started from the day the band was formed.
"Compass Man" abandoned the single HARD ROCK style that once made them very popular, and did not stick to a particular musical idea and language mode. Zhou Di said that we advocate free and natural creation, and our works are the fusion of many musical elements, including some European and American trends and folk music elements rooted in our living soil ("Yaomei"). We're just a compass band, and it's terrible to give a frame. In this album, including production, arrangement and so on, which is entirely directed by Compass Man, Liu Zhengrong almost arranged all the lyrics.
Liu Zhengrong has been wandering in this city for a long time, and was once a member of Mayday Band, which was rich in lead singers. His infectious and penetrating voice and excellent rhythm control ability in the only love song that has moved me so far convey a persistent belief and unpretentious frankness. I believe that when he described his innermost feelings in that cold and humid basement in 1992, he must have been deeply hit by an unforgettable pain of losing love. He is used to following his own land and life when creating, and relying on his fantasy and hope "Give peace a chance" and "withered life" to express his mourning for a quiet home and clean land. "No more thoughts" and "light balloons" are a tribute to hope and freedom, while "Soul Song" is a nostalgia for fragile and perishable life.
The sincerity and enthusiasm that runs through this album has always been the theme of Liu Zhengrong's creation. That is, like his understanding of "compass", the compass is not just a locator, it refers to all levels of society, life and people's emotional dreams. The most important thing is not to lose yourself in all kinds of desires.
There was a broken and rough European and American song that was copied, which deeply touched the Compass Man. So far, they don't know the title and singer of the song. "Compass Man" describes that unknown feeling as a soul (wizard) unyielding in suffering. Compass Man believes that the source of creation comes from the projection of reality in the mind. It's been three years, and I haven't heard anything about this band. They seem to have faded out of people's memory in these long days and nights, and they are close to forgetting in the wash of time.
At the beginning of 1997, Compass signed a contract with Beijing Jingwen Audio & Video Company, which brought together the music of domestic excellent original bands, and became its artists. At the same time, it was another new army of Jingwen Band after Zero, Ziyue, Bao Jiajie No.43 and Tieyulan Band. Since then, Jingwen Band Group has expanded to five branches, and together with veterans Cui Jian and Yudi, it can be said that it has a large scale and strong strength.
After that, Compass Band has been composed of all-in-one Sichuan Army, including lead singer Liu Zhengrong, keyboard player Guo Liang, guitarist Zhou Di, bass Yue Haokun, drummer Zheng Zhaohui and saxophonist Yuan Ding. Except lead singer Liu Zhengrong, the rest of the band members are all musicians of Compass original band. Liu Zhengrong joined the compass and became the lead singer after Luo Qi left the team in 1994, and has been so far.
For Compass's last album, in fact, its own music value is far less than the story behind it, and this story can be said to be the only one that still remains in people's memory about the real strength of this album's music Nanjing.
