A brief history of the dramas of Shangdang Xiazi

Shangdang Xiazi originated from Wuan, Hebei Province. It was formed by absorbing the artistic nutrition of folk songs and Shangdang Bangzi in the Qing Dynasty.

During the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty, some people in Luhe Village, Lucheng County organized a Heyi class, and put "Beating the Ground and Circle" on the stage. Shortly thereafter, Xinyi Class in Weizi Town, Licheng County, Fuyi Class in Li Jiazhuang and Tiancheng Class in Zhangzi County were established one after another, with activities in Lu 'an, Tunliu and Anze.

In order to compete with Shangdang Bangzi for the audience, Li Cheng, a late-stage performer, invited Wang Sihu (also known as Han Baotai) from Hebei in the 1th year of Guangxu (1884) to teach for many years, which made Li Cheng develop in content and form, and changed from only performing small plays of folk life to also performing dynasty dramas.

In the 28th year of Guangxu (191), the artist Wang Sanhe brought the performing skills of Pu Opera back to Shangdang area, and also absorbed martial arts skills such as Sanchakou, Hebei Bangzi, which enriched the drama items, improved the musical singing and performing arts, and expanded its activities to most places in Shangdang, Linfen, Taiyuan, Ruicheng, Yongji, Yonghe, Daning, Shexian and Hebei. From the 28th year of Guangxu (192) to the 24th year of the Republic of China (1935), there were more than 2 clubs in Licheng, Lucheng, Huguan, Changzi, Tunliu and Jinnan, including Zhuban, Xingsheng and Pingsheng. More than 1 plays were often performed, and the operas flourished.

In the 27th year of the Republic of China (1938), Wang Congwen organized artists who had left the opera in Licheng to compile and perform a new drama reflecting the life of the anti-Japanese struggle, and put forward a plan to reform the drama to the superior leaders. In the 28th year of the Republic of China, with the support of Rong Wusheng (Rong Zihe), the Commissioner of Shanxi Fifth Specialized Agency, and Wang Xingrang, the head of Changzhi Central District of Ximenghui, an anti-Japanese troupe was established, which mainly composed and performed modern dramas, and created and performed Eight Roads War Pingxingguan, War on Shentouling, Tianjinwei, Wang Treason, Women Kill the Enemy, Taierzhuang and so on. In 31 of the Republic of China, the Anti-Japanese Troupe was incorporated into Tainan Shengli Troupe, and continued to rehearse plays such as Anti-Sweeping, Spring Farming Movement and Double Change of Mind, which cooperated with the anti-Japanese struggle, reduced rent and interest, and produced self-help. Because of his outstanding achievements in reforming drama, Wang Congwen won the title of first-class model dramatist at the cultural and educational conference in Taihang District held in May, 1934.

From 29 to 38 years of the Republic of China, the professional drama troupes that have been set up successively include Changzhi Shengli Troupe, Tunliu Jianghe Troupe, Licheng Liming Troupe, Lucheng Volkswagen Troupe, Pingshun Peasant Troupe, Huguan People's Troupe, etc., and rehearsed Revenge of Blood and Tears, White-haired Girl, wang gui and li xiangxiang, Wang Xiuluan, Red Leaf River and Stone Inch Gold.
