The School of Music of Central China Normal University has a long history. Its predecessor was the Music Department of the College of Education of Huazhong University (referred to as Huazhong University). The first annual concert was held in April 1932.

Before the founding of the People’s Republic of China, a variety of cultural and artistic activities formed a beautiful scenery on the BGI campus, which was quite famous in Wuhan and even central China. The choir organized by professors of the music department not only includes students majoring in music, but also attracts music-loving faculty and other students. It is a very active literary and artistic group on the BGI campus. The choir has performed specially at the Victoria Grand Theater in Hankou, and has held many concerts in schools and the annual Huazhong University Concert.

The music group also holds regular music appreciation sessions. Every Thursday night at 8pm, the Gongshulin Auditorium is always packed with people singing. The appreciation sessions often display music business cards from various countries, and are supplemented by solos and ensembles on piano, violin and other musical instruments by professors from the music department and students majoring in music. Well-known musicians and music lovers from three towns in Wuhan are also invited to perform. The weekly music appreciation programs alternate and the content is very exciting. Especially the familiar teacher-student performances. Before each famous song is played or a music card is played, a dedicated person will explain it to enhance the audience's appreciation.

In addition, the choir of Huazhong University was famous in Wuhan before the war and often served as a broadcaster and singer of sacred music at Hankou Radio Station. The choir has dozens of members, including male and female high and low voices. It is conducted by Professor D.F. Anderson and trained jointly by all professors from the music department. From December 20 to 21, 1947, he performed the "Messiah" hymn cantata on campus for two consecutive days, and was subsequently invited to perform at the Hubei Christian Union and Hankou Radio Station.

The Jiangfeng Dance Club, composed of Hua teachers and students, is the most popular artistic group on campus. What they are best at performing is the distinctive border dance and folk dance, and they have more than ten repertoires. Among them, "Agriculture Dance" and "Miao Dance" have special styles that are different from Western dances, and deeply reflect the local color and folk life sentiments. Foreign faculty members were especially praised after watching them.

In 1952, the departments of colleges and universities across the country were restructured. Based on the merger of the music department of the former Hubei Provincial Institute of Education and the music major of the private China University, it was officially named the Music Department of Central China Normal University in 1953. The director of the department was Lu Huabai. , the department was located outside Tanhualin City, Wuchang County (today’s Hubei Institute of Fine Arts).

In 1958, the music department moved to Jiefang Road (now Wuhan Conservatory of Music) and merged with the original Central and South Music College to form Hubei Arts College and decouple from China Normal University
