Chris Martin has been playing the piano since he was a child. He has been involved in various bands since he was 15 years old, and has been praised by Tom Waits. Johnny Bonham was influenced by guitarists such as Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix and began playing guitar at the age of 11. Guy Berryman from Scotland was influenced by some funk music and picked up the bass. Before joining Coldplay, Will Champion played guitar, bass, flute and other instruments. In September 1996, Chris Martin, who had just entered University College London, met Johnny Bonlam and planned to form a band in the following academic year.
