Introduction to Shanghai Conservatory of Music
Shanghai Conservatory of Music is the founder and incubator of modern professional music education in China , one of the first batch of “double first-class” colleges and universities in the country, enjoys a high reputation at home and abroad as an outstanding representative of Chinese music education, and is known as the “cradle of musicians.”
The Shanghai Conservatory of Music, formerly known as the National Conservatory of Music, was founded in Shanghai on November 27, 1927 by Mr. Cai Yuanpei and Mr. Xiao Youmei. The first president was Mr. Cai Yuanpei. It is the first independent national higher education institution in China. The School of Music, with the school-running philosophy of “aiding the West to establish China, turning application into a body”, has established the professional structure and discipline system of China’s professional music education. In 1956, it changed its current name and became a key institution directly under the Ministry of Culture. It is now a joint institution established by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Shanghai Municipal Government. In 2017, it was listed as one of the first batch of “double first-class” construction universities in the country and selected as a high-level local university construction school in Shanghai.
