Xiao Youmei (1884-1940) was a native of Zhongshan County, Guangdong. He studied music in Japan for nine years and went to Germany to specialize in music for eight years. In 1916, he received a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Leipzig, becoming the first doctorate in the Chinese music industry. After returning to China in 1920, he participated in the establishment of two schools, the "Peking University Music Institute" and the "National Conservatory of Music". They were both important music education institutions in China in the 1920s. Xiao Youmei has been serving as the director of the "National Conservatory of Music" ( Later renamed "National Shanghai Music College") administrative and teaching work until his death. Xiao Youmei's greatest contribution to Chinese music lies in music education. Therefore, people respect him as "the father of modern Chinese music education". Xiao Youmei is also a pioneer in professional music creation in China. In 1916, while still studying in Germany, he composed piano music, string quartet, military ensemble and other works. The orchestral music "New Colorful Feather Dance" composed after returning to China is China's first orchestral work. His widely circulated art song "Question" was published in 1922. This song sang the worries of the young people at that time about the separation of mountains and rivers and the sinking of the country. The ups and downs of the melody contained endless emotions.
