It was established by the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government and the Ministry of Culture under the Shanghai Municipal Government. The name was changed to the Secondary Music College Affiliated to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music; in the same year, the Children's Music School Affiliated to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music (referred to as the Shanghai Conservatory of Music Affiliated Primary School) was established. In 1996, Shangyin Affiliated Primary School was merged into Shangyin Affiliated Middle School, and a unified music education management system of large, medium and primary schools was implemented.
