The Vienna New Year Concert kicked off on January 1, 2023 at the Vienna Musikverein.
In terms of program arrangement, the 2023 Vienna New Year Concert has the largest number of premieres in recent years. The official repertoire shows that there are 18 works in the first set, 14 of which are performed at the New Year's Concert for the first time, breaking the record for the number of premiere works. The previous record still stood at 11 works in 2013.
The addition of ballet to the concert has become a major tradition of the Vienna New Year's Concert. At the 2023 New Year's Concert, three works were integrated into ballet performances, one of which was the classic encore "Blue Danube" Waltz.
Tradition of works:
The Vienna Philharmonic formed a tradition of playing Strauss's works thanks to a fanatical supporter of Strauss's works at that time: Klement S. Klaus. On August 11, 1929, he conducted the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in Salzburg, Austria, for a series of concerts composed entirely of Strauss family works.
Due to the huge success of the concert, he held similar concerts every year until 1933. Of course, in addition to the works of Johann Strauss the Younger, the concert also included works by other members of his family. This was the prototype of the New Year's Concert.
