Shanghai Conservatory of Music, referred to as "Shangyin", is located in Shanghai, organized by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, and is a member of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People's Republic of China and the People's Republic of China It is a full-time higher professional music (art) college jointly established with the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, a national "double first-class" construction university, and a high-level local university construction school in Shanghai.

The predecessor of the college is the Shanghai "National Conservatory of Music" co-founded by the democratic revolutionist, educator and thinker Mr. Cai Yuanpei and the music educator Dr. Xiao Youmei on November 27, 1927. It is the first conservatory in China. An independent national higher music institution, its first dean is Mr. Cai Yuanpei. In September 1929, it was renamed the National Music College.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the school was named "East China Branch of the Central Conservatory of Music" and was renamed Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 1956. It is a key institution directly under the Ministry of Culture and is now a cultural and tourism institution. The Ministry of Education and Shanghai Municipal Government established colleges and universities. From 1949 to 1984, composer, music theorist and music educator He Luting served as the dean (later the honorary dean) for a long time.
