The predecessor of Tianjin Conservatory of Music was the Central Conservatory of Music. In October 1958, the Central Conservatory of Music moved to Beijing, leaving some teachers and students of the Central Conservatory of Music to establish the Tianjin Conservatory of Music (originally named Hebei Conservatory of Music, and changed to its current name the following year) at the original site of the conservatory. Later, the college merged with some art, drama (opera), dance and other art troupes in Tianjin, and successively changed its name to Tianjin "Wuqi" Art School, Tianjin Art Institute, etc. In 1980, the State Council approved the renaming of Tianjin Conservatory of Music. At the same time, the college was approved as one of the first institutions in the country to grant master's and bachelor's degrees. The first dean of Tianjin Conservatory of Music was Miao Tianrui, a famous music educator and theorist.

After more than half a century of construction, the college has trained and delivered nearly 10,000 creative and performing arts talents to society. Tianjin Conservatory of Music has developed into an important higher art education institution in the northern region that cultivates talents in music, dance, drama, film and television. It offers 11 undergraduate majors such as music performance.
