Hunan ancient painting drama is the general name of ancient painting drama and lantern drama all over Hunan, including Changsha ancient painting drama, Changde ancient painting drama, Yueyang ancient painting drama, Hengyang ancient painting drama, Lingling ancient painting drama and Qiyang and Dongan ancient painting lantern.

Hunan ancient painting drama is developed on the basis of local folk songs, minor tunes and folk songs and dances. The once ugly Flower Drum Opera was formed at the latest in Jiaqing period of Qing Dynasty. In the early days, it was a life drama with folk songs singing and dancing, such as "Bird Hunting", "Pan Hua" and "Visiting Yun". Since the introduction of "Gong Tune" and "Chuan Tune", folk legendary dramas with strong stories have begun to appear.

There are more than 400 kinds of ancient paintings and operas in Hunan, which mainly reflect the folk life such as productive labor, love between men and women and family conflicts. Changsha Flower Drum Opera "Liu Hai Chops Wood" depicts the scene where the woodcutter Liu Hai meets the fox spirit Hu Xiuying. I adored Liu and wanted to marry him, but Liu refused to agree because his family was poor. Hu repeatedly declared that he was willing to stay poor, and the two married.

There are 300 vocal cavities in ancient painting operas, which can be divided into four categories: ① Sichuan cavity, or Gong Zheng cavity; (2) playing gongs; ③ The brand originated from southern Hunan folk songs; (4) Minor, which is a localized tune in Ming and Qing Dynasties. The music structure is mainly composed of Qupai couplets, supplemented by plate changes.

Sichuan opera is the main vocal cavity of Hunan ancient painting drama. Hunan dialect calls the aria "Guomen" (interlude) Chuanzi or Chuanzi, which means that the sung sentences are strung together by the goalkeeper. Sichuan tune is composed of door phrases and aria phrases, which is closely related to Hunan folk songs.

Gong can be divided into two types: orthochromatic gong and Sanqu gong. Traditional gongs and drums are not accompanied by stringed instruments, but are sung by one person and supported by one person. The gongs and drums are interspersed between the sentences of the gongs and drums, similar to the high-pitched gongs in the play. The structure of Mupidiao is the basic form of gong.
