What is MAMA?

MAMA (Mnet Asian Music Awards Ceremony) refers to the Mnet Asian Music Awards.

The Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) is a music award hosted by CJ E&M. The award was founded in 1999 and was formerly known as the Mnet Video Music Awards, Mnet Music Video Festival, Mnet KM Music Video Festival, and Mnet KM Music Festival. In 2009, it was officially renamed the Mnet Asian Music Awards.

This award ceremony is the largest music awards ceremony in Asia and one of the most representative and authoritative music awards ceremonies in South Korea.

The Mnet Asian Music Awards awards are divided into K-POP department (20 permanent awards), Asian Music department (6 permanent awards), professional department (6 permanent awards) and other awards. Each session The specific awards for the grand prize will be announced with the current shortlist and award ceremony.

The Mnet Asian Music Awards shortlist is selected by the MAMA Alternate Selection Committee, and the final award is determined based on four parts of data including audience voting and MAMA professional jury review.

The Mnet Asian Music Awards ceremony is usually held from November to December every year. From 1999 to 2009, the Mnet Asian Music Awards ceremony was held in South Korea. Since 2010, the award ceremony has been held outside South Korea.

From November 25th to December 1st, 2017, the 2017 Mnet Asian Music Awards were held in Vietnam, Yokohama, Japan, and Hong Kong, China. This was the first time that the same award ceremony was held in multiple places at the same time.

In 1999, the Mnet Video Music Awards (the predecessor of the Mnet Asian Music Awards) was established in South Korea, sponsored by South Korea's Mnet Cable Hosted by the TV station, this is South Korea's first MV awards ceremony.

In 2000, it was renamed Mnet Music Video Festival.

In 2004, the Korean music channel KMTV was acquired by Mnet's parent company CJ E&M. In the same year, the Mnet Video Music Awards was renamed Mnet KM Music Video Festival.

In 2006, Mnet KM Music Video Festival was renamed Mnet KM Music Festival.

On October 20, 2009, Mnet KM Music Festival announced on its official website that MKMF would be canceled starting that year. In November of the same year, CJ E&M announced that the Mnet KM Music Festival was officially renamed the Mnet Asian Music Awards, and was changed from being co-organized by Mnet and KMTV to being independently organized by Mnet Media.

In 2010, the 2010 Mnet Asian Music Awards ceremony was held in Macau, China. This was the first time that the award ceremony was held overseas in South Korea.

In 2017, the 2017 Mnet Asian Music Awards ceremony was held in Vietnam, Yokohama, Japan, and Hong Kong, China. This was the first time that the award ceremony was held in multiple places at the same time.
