Liu Beimao is the younger brother of Liu Tianhua, an outstanding national musician in China, a famous folk music composer, erhu player and music educator. Due to the early death of his parents, he grew up under the care of his elder brothers (Liu Bannong, the eldest brother, and Liu Tianhua, the second brother). Under the careful guidance of Liu Tianhua, he mastered the playing skills of many Chinese and foreign musical instruments in his early years, especially the national musical instruments such as erhu and pipa. Liu Beimao showed his musical talent when he was a teenager. In 1927, Liu Beimao graduated with honors from the English Department of yenching university, and later engaged in the teaching and research of Selected Readings of Shakespeare's Works, Poetics and Composition Guidance in Shanghai Jinan University, Peking University and Northwest Associated University. After Liu Tianhua's death, in order to inherit his legacy of "improving Chinese music", Liu Beimao insisted on teaching and research of English for literary majors, and at the same time, he made more efforts to learn national musical instruments such as erhu and pipa, and began to create music. His erhu solos, such as South of the Han Dynasty, March, Song of a Wanderer, and Little Flower Drum, sincerely and profoundly expressed the righteous intellectuals' love for the motherland and the people and their hatred for the enemy under reactionary rule. During the ten years of turmoil, although he suffered from it, with great enthusiasm and perseverance, he wrote a song "Remembering" that deeply missed the proletarian revolutionaries of the older generation, "A Melody of Legends" by beloved Premier Zhou Enlai, and "Welcome to Zhaohui" that enthusiastically praised the construction of the four modernizations. In his 4 years of hard work, he has always insisted on inheriting the excellent tradition of national music and absorbed and used foreign music culture for reference. More than 1 of his works have distinctive national style and innovative spirit.
His works are as simple and sincere as his personality. Although Mr. Liu Beimao has left us, his excellent qualities of pursuing truth, progress, being courteous to others, being rigorous in his studies and striving for the cause of national music will always be worthy of our study and commemoration.
Liu Beimao's road to art
Liu Beimao has a good memory and strong imitation. He studied English in a missionary school when he was a primary school, and later became a famous linguist with Lv Shuxiang. He taught English in our school when he was in high school. He was admitted to Soochow University in 1923, and then admitted to yenching university as a transfer student. At the age of 29, he became an English professor in Peking University, and he was a famous expert on Shakespeare studies.
After Liu Tianhua died, Liu Bannong told him, "The second brother's children are still young, and there are not many students who have lived up to expectations. It seems that the second brother's career needs you to inherit." Since then, Liu Beimao has changed to music. In 1935, in commemoration of the 3rd anniversary of Liu Tianhua's death, Liu Beimao performed ten famous songs of Liu Tianhua, which surprised everyone.
After the "July 7th Incident", Liu Beimao was encouraged to be a senior secretary in the puppet Ministry of Education. He angrily denounced him and resolutely refused to work for the Japanese, saying that he was ill and would not attend classes. After going through hardships, I made a detour to Hong Kong, Yunnan and other places, and went to Chenggu, Shaanxi, an important position of anti-Japanese culture in northwest China. At the invitation of Mr. Xu Shoushang, a close friend of Lu Xun, I taught at Northwest United University. This feat of Mr. Liu shows his lofty national integrity and patriotic sentiments.
In the late period of the Liberation War, the reactionary regime in Nanjing was tottering, but it was still unwilling to quit the historical stage. Instead, it intensified its cruel rule over the broad masses of people. Under this circumstance, Mr. Liu Beimao resolutely supported and actively participated in the progressive teachers and students' rehearsal of the folk music ensemble "Spring Dawn in the Cuihu Lake" by the people's musician Nie Er, with progressive and revolutionary music sweeping away the decadent sound of the music industry in Nanjing at that time, and at the same time giving great spiritual encouragement to the people in struggle. In April of the same year, the "April 1st" tragedy happened in Nanjing, and the reactionary regime brutally suppressed the revolutionary actions of progressive students. Mr. Liu Beimao went to the residence of progressive students who were expelled from school, shook hands and gave a condolence performance, regardless of his personal safety. These actions show Mr. Liu Beimao's noble character of clear love and hate. This is by no means an impulse, but a logical necessity for him to inherit the ideological interests of his elder brother, Mr. Bannong, and Mr. Tianhua, constantly pursue progress and hate the development of darkness.
while hating the reactionary rule of * * *, Mr. Liu Beimao showed great love for China * * * and his revolutionary cause and the new China. As early as the eve of the victory of the War of Liberation, he looked forward to Prometheus of China, and was full of longing and great confidence for the inevitable victory of China and China Revolution. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Mr. Liu Beimao was even more elated. His music creation, erhu performance and music education in by going up one flight of stairs praised China, the new China, the revolution and construction, and the industrious and intelligent people of China with his passionate love and inexhaustible artistic talent. During the Cultural Revolution, Mr. Liu Beimao also showed noble personality and valuable qualities. On the one hand, he refused to expose the so-called "problems" of leaders and colleagues. On the other hand, despite the impact and persecution, he still firmly believed that the social situation at that time was only a temporary phenomenon, and the bright future of social stability would surely come. He firmly believes in the party, the people, seeking truth from facts and never selling himself for glory. He encouraged and urged himself with the ideological realm of "not afraid of floating clouds covering his eyes, only being at the highest level".
