The Central Conservatory of Music is a higher education institution in China that cultivates music and art talents. Founded in 1950, its predecessors were several higher music conservatories and departments with their own characteristics from the 1920s to the 1940s. They are the Music Department of Yenching University founded in 1927, the Music Department of North China University College of Literature and Art founded in 1939, the Nanjing National Conservatory of Music founded in 1940, the Music Department of the National Peking Art College founded in 1946, and the Music Department of Hong Kong and The China Conservatory of Music in Shanghai, the Music Department of the Northeastern Lu Xun Academy of Literature and Art founded in 1948, etc. Its main body is Nanjing National Conservatory of Music. In 1958, the college moved from Tianjin to Beijing and is located at the former site of Qingchun Palace in Fuxingmen, Xicheng District, Beijing (the birthplace of Emperor Guangxu). It was originally affiliated to the Ministry of Culture and was transferred to the Ministry of Education in 2000. It was designated as a national key university in 1960 and included in the national "211 Project" construction school in 1999. It is currently the only national key university and "211 Project" construction school among art colleges in the country. The successive presidents are Ma Sicong, Zhao Feng, Wu Zuqiang, Yu Runyang, and Liu Lin. The current president is Wang Cizheng.
