The Central Conservatory of Music was established in 1949 by several music education institutions including the National Conservatory of Music in 1940. Formed through a merger, it is an institution of higher learning that cultivates senior professional music talents. It is the only national key university and "211 Project" construction institution among art colleges in the country. In 2017, it was selected as a national "double first-class" discipline construction university.
Currently there are composition department, musicology department, conducting department, piano department, orchestral department, folk music department, vocal opera department, music education college, violin production and research center, band college, affiliated middle school music school, Teaching departments such as the School of Modern Distance Music Education and the School of Continuing Education, and the Institute of Musicology, a key research base for humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education.
