The Music Education Department of Shanghai Conservatory of Music was officially established in 1997. When the National Conservatory of Music was founded in 1927, the music education major was established, which was called the Teacher Training Course. After 1949, he trained several music education professionals for the Shanghai Municipal Education Bureau and various regional education committees. In 1997, with the support of the Central Ministry of Culture and the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, and the direct care of Dean He Luting, the Department of Music Education was established. The first department chair was concurrently served by Professor Jiang Mingdun, who was the then Dean. Since its establishment, the department has actively introduced modern music teaching methods and learned from advanced music education concepts at home and abroad. In 2001, it was the first time in China to propose a professional main course centered on the theory and practice of music education, establishing the disciplinary positioning of the department, and gradually Form a music education system with Chinese characteristics.

The Department of Music Education has emerged in the field of scientific research. It is not only responsible for the compilation of Shanghai Middle School Music Textbooks" and "Shanghai Middle School Art Textbooks", It has also undertaken scientific research projects from the Central Ministry of Culture and the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission.
The Department of Music Education aims to cultivate high-level music education talents. There are four-year undergraduate programs, three-year master's programs, and multi-level education such as various types of further education, junior college upgrading, and targeted junior college classes. It recruits students nationwide (including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan), and also accepts foreign students to study in the school. Since the establishment of the department, it has insisted on exchanges with all over the world.
