Why not use music during speeches?

There have been many speech contests recently. As the president of the Speech Association, I am either coaching the contestants or sitting on the judges' bench.

When I was coaching players, one player asked me if I could have some music. I said, it's best not to match. Then I talked about the reason why I didn’t have a soundtrack.

Last night in the speech eloquence class, there were contestants from the city attending the class. I also explained the reasons why my speech should not be accompanied by music. The students all felt that what I said was very reasonable.

In fact, in the past ten years, whether speeches can be accompanied by music has not only become a topic of debate in the speech community, but also a speech phenomenon often seen in practice. I have never commented on this phenomenon. Deny it, but don’t support it either.

I don’t deny it because as a form, speech with music already exists. In some cases, the effect seems to be pretty good. In some training institutions, it has become “must” to rely on music to create an environment. Without music, there is no guarantee. training effect. Some speakers also use music to build momentum and create a specific atmosphere in their large-scale speeches to achieve the purpose of infecting the audience. It is said that the effect is also good.

But I really don’t support it. There are three reasons:

The above situations are not normal in work and life, and may not even occur.

Then, there is the third one. Since speaking in work and life does not need to be accompanied by music, then there is no need for music to accompany speeches, because speeches are the form of speaking in work and life, not reciting or singing.

Speech is the art of language. Conquering the audience depends on content and skills, that is, the charm of thought, the magic of language, the concentration of emotion, and the shocking power of expression. Just like cross talk, the story is uninteresting and the baggage is unattractive. Even if you use all the playing, playing and singing, it will not help.

Not only am I not disgusted with music, I also like it very much, but that is when singing on the stage, not when giving a speech, because I know that movies need music, because movies are audio-visual art, and their stories are all is false; recitation requires music, because recitation is a performing art, and its emotions are often fictitious; the essence of speech is the form of speech in work and life, which means that it is real - telling the truth, telling the truth, Express true emotions, so there is no need for music to enhance the atmosphere. If there is music involved, people will think that what you are telling is false and fictitious, because this is what movies and recitations do.

Five years ago, I was the director of the judges for the Shandong Provincial College Student Speech Contest. Many students used music during the preliminaries. During the comments, I suggested not to use music in the finals. I firmly said, do not use music. With music, your finals will be even more exciting. As a result, the contestants who used music in the preliminaries did not use it in the finals, and they generally believed that they performed better than in the preliminaries. Some contestants' rankings were significantly higher than in the preliminaries because they abandoned the constraints of music, ran freely, and had more emotional It is real and the content is more vivid, credible and touching.

The judges were also comfortable. They said: the music in the speech was simply noise.
