Shanghai Conservatory of Music, referred to as "Shangyin" for short, is a full-time professional music (art) college organized by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, established by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People's Republic of China and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, a member of the European Conservatory of Music and the Pacific Rim Conservatory of Music, and a national "double-class" world-class discipline construction university. He has been selected as the founder and incubator of modern professional music education in China, and is known as the cradle of musicians.

The Academy was formerly the "National Conservatory of Music" founded by the democratic revolutionist, educator and thinker Mr. Cai Yuanpei and the music educator Dr. Xiao Youmei on November 27th, 1927. It is the first independent national institution of higher music in China, and its first president is Mr. Cai Yuanpei. In September 1929, it was renamed the National Conservatory of Music. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the school used to be called "East China Branch of the Central Conservatory of Music". In 1956, it was named Shanghai Conservatory of Music, a key institution directly under the Ministry of Culture, and now it is an institution established by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Shanghai.
