The Secondary Music School Affiliated to the Central Conservatory of Music is a national key secondary vocational school directly under the Ministry of Education, and has been rated as a provincial and ministerial key junior college by the Ministry of Culture.

Its predecessor was the kindergarten class of the National Conservatory of Music founded in Chongqing in 1945 (later moved to Changzhou, Jiangsu). In 1950, the Central Conservatory of Music was established. The kindergarten class was merged into the Central Conservatory of Music along with the National Conservatory of Music and was renamed the Junior Class of the Central Conservatory of Music. On June 1, 1957, the school was officially established and named "The Secondary Music School Affiliated to the Central Conservatory of Music".

The Middle School Affiliated to the Central Conservatory of Music is a six-year secondary vocational school, including keyboard instrument performance, orchestral instrument performance, Chinese instrument performance, comprehensive music theory, composition, conducting, musicology, instrument construction, music education, and vocal music and opera singing and other majors. Since its establishment, the school has always attached great importance to artistic practice and external exchanges.

Famous artists such as Menuhin and Stern have come to the school to give lectures and teach their skills. The school also sends outstanding teachers and students to visit various countries around the world every year to participate in various performance activities aimed at strengthening cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries.

As early as 1959, the only youth orchestra in the country, the "Red Scarf Band", was established in the attached middle school. In the 1960s, this band received cordial care and praise from the older generation of proletarian revolutionaries such as Zhou Enlai and Deng Xiaoping. . Over the years, with the encouragement and support from all walks of life and the strict training and careful cultivation of teachers, the band's performance level has improved day by day. Since the 1980s, he has also received guidance from world-famous music masters such as Seiji Ozawa.

In 1988, the "Red Scarf Band" was renamed as the "China Youth Symphony Orchestra", and its scale and formalization were further strengthened. The orchestra has visited Southeast Asia, some European countries, and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. A lot of useful work has been done to carry forward national culture, publicize the results of reform and opening up, strengthen friendly exchanges, and promote the realization of the great cause of the reunification of the motherland.

Since the 1990s, the Affiliated Middle School has successively established the "Youth National Orchestra", "Children's Choir", and "Youth Chamber Orchestra". Through the performance activities of these groups, the professional quality of the students in the attached middle school has been enhanced and their artistic practice abilities have been tempered. At the same time, it has also added new content to the display of the outstanding achievements of China's art education.
