Early life
MC Ren was born in Compton, California, the holy land of gangsters. He later studied and graduated from Dominguiz High School. I dropped out of school after my freshman year of high school.
Music career
Since his debut in 1987, MC Ren has participated in singing and writing lyrics for two official albums and one EP in N.W.A. After going solo in 1992, he released four official albums, an EP, an acoustic album, and the failed and unknown Reinincarnated.
Integrating into N.W.A (1986~1987)
After completing his freshman year of high school, MC Ren was recommended to Eazy-E by DJ Train, a friend he grew up with. After appearing on the cover of Eazy-E's single "Boyz N the Hood", MC Ren was signed by Eazy-E to his Ruthless label and participated in the group formed by Eazy-E, N.W.A. Later, he appeared on the team's first single 8Ball.
Later, 8Ball was included in N.W.A's first unofficial album N.W.AandthePosse. At the same time, M.C. Ren also appeared on the album cover, standing between M.C. Hip and Eazy-E (then called M.C. Ren). Although MCRen stood next to Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, IceCube and Arabian Prince, MCRen was not a member of N.W.A at the time, but was just an artist signed to Ruthless, an independent music label created by Eazy-E. But this laid the foundation for him to officially join N.W.A.
After IceCube composed the song Boyznda Hood, due to academic problems, IceCube flew to Phoenix to study architecture. MCRen composed some songs for Eazy-E that would later appear on the album Eazy-Duz-It, such as "Radio" , "Eazy-Duz-It", "RuthlessVillain", because Eazy-E refused that he was "not good at singing faster raps", so at the invitation of Dr. Dre, MC Ren officially joined N.W.A.
The heyday with N.W.A (1988~1989)
MCRen sang almost all the songs on N.W.A's second album Straight Outta Compton (except GangstaGangsta, 8Ballremix, ExpressYourself and IAin'tthe1 ), and gradually became an excellent lyricist. He wrote a large number of lyrics for the album. But the arrival of MCRen accelerated Arabian Prince's departure to a great extent - because Arabian Prince's position in N.W.A was replaced, and in the end he only had the task of singing and writing lyrics in the song Something2Dance2. Eventually Arabian Prince left N.W.A before the release of Straight Outta Compton. MC Ren has become the backbone of N.W.A.
Next, he participated in the production and singing of Eazy-E's debut album Eazy-Duz-It, and his nickname "TheRuthlessVillain" also came from the third track "RuthlessVillain" in the album.
N.W.A’s disbandment and disputes (1990~mid-1991)
In 1989, IceCube was suspicious and dissatisfied with Jerry Heller (Eazy-E’s manager)’s illegal control of performance fees. After leaving the team angrily. MC Ren continued to write lyrics. N.W.A arbitrarily insulted IceCube in the EP album 100 Miles and Runnin'. MCRen and TheD, O.C. for the song "Real Niggaz", arbitrarily insulted IceCube and accused IceCube of hypocrisy.
Later, N.W.A became the first truly profitable gangsta rap group with the album Efil4zaggin. About.com also commented on the album, "N.W.A is still vicious, unapologetic and outspoken. ”(N.W.A.remainedvicious,unapologetic,andvividlyoutspoken.). But IceCube went crazy in October 1991 and released the album Death Certificate, especially the single NoVaseline, which insulted all N.W.A members including MC Ren (except Arabian Prince who left the group in 1988) in response to Niggaz4life's "The Message to B. A." and "100MilesandRunnin'" in 100MilesandRunnin'.
In the end, IceCube won the dispute, which had an indelible impact on N.W.A and directly led to the latter's disbandment. Dr. Dre ultimately had financial problems - like IceCube, he eventually began to suspect that Jerry Heller was indeed causing trouble. He chose to leave Ruthless, but he also took TheD.O.C. and Michel'le with him, causing a huge blow to Eazy-E and the Ruthless label. N.W.A has since disbanded, and MC Ren continues to stay on the Ruthless label. When MC Ren later talked about Dr. Dre leaving N.W.A following IceCube's footsteps, he believed that Eazy-E was deeply affected by this incident.
After N.W.A disbanded, MCRen released the EP album KizzMyBlackAzz, which successfully obtained platinum certification from the RIAA. The entire album reflects the strength and seriousness of MCRen's lyrics. Dre later insulted Eazy-E and Jerry Heller on the album, The Chronic, released in December 1992. Eazy-E also hit back at Dr. Dre and his disciple Snoop Doggy Dogg with the single Real Muthaphuckkin'G's. MC Ren later repaired the relationship with IceCube, and like DJ Yella, he did not take a position on the dispute between Eazy-E and Dr. Dre. He is in a neutral state and is loyal to Eazy-E's Ruthless label and concentrates on making albums.
On March 2, 1993, MCRen released the single May Day on the Frontline, and the MV was subsequently played on TV channels. Fab5Freddy then conducted an interview with Eazy-E and MCRen. Eazy-E immediately said, "There were more idiots in 1993." (Suckersfreein93, alluding to Dr. Dre's 1992 album The Chronic) "(Eazy-E), IceCube, Ren and Yella formed N.W.A" ("... IceCube, RenandYella, that'sN.W.A"), and said that Dr. Dre is a "NoLove" person. When Fab5Freddy asked, "Are you interested in making an album that was reorganized and produced by N.W.A?" (...areyouexcitedtogetbacktotheN.W.Aalbum?), MCRen said vaguely, "Everyone wants to do it, and I want to do it too. . Although some people don't want to... But everyone can sit down and discuss it, just like me." There was no mention of disputes between members like Eazy-E.
His second album, Life Sentence, was scrapped because he followed DJ Train’s persuasion to join the Nation of Islam. However, MCRen’s transformation into a Muslim unexpectedly helped MCRen and other members of N.W.A. Rebuild relationships. In 1993, MC Ren released Shock of the Hour, which was certified gold by the RIAA. The album's single, Mayday on the Frontline, was selected as the soundtrack for the film, CB4. The album is known for its unbalanced style and strong philosophical concepts. The Islamic and philosophical side is represented by the song "Attack the Babylon", while another single "Same Ol' Shit" is considered to fully embody the gangster's lifestyle and their atrocities ( such as rape), bigotry and violence. It is also a continuation of the previous album KizzMyBlackAzz (referring to MC Ren before he joined the Islamic State).
Unfortunately, in 1994, before MCRen decided to produce his third album DaVillaininBlack, his long-time partner, DJ Train, died in an indoor fire. DJ Train's brother, Jesse "Tootie" Lars (Jesse Lars), who helped MCRen produce Same Ol' Shit, also said: "He is a good guy..." ("Hewasareallycoolguy.") After that, an even bigger blow followed. Then, on March 26, 1995, just one month after fighting AIDS, Eazy-E passed away, which shocked the entire gangsta rap world and strengthened MCren's determination to release an album again.
The Villain in Black, produced by Cold187um from Above the Law, was released immediately after MC Ren was shocked by Eazy-E's death. Although it did not have the support of radio and single promotion, the overall sales were acceptable. As a G-Funk album, it's not great. Gangster clichés litter the album. In fact, throughout the history of American rap, no artist can achieve both fame and fortune because of gangsters. Whether it is The Notorious B.I.G., IceCube, 2pac, or Snoop Dogg, they all eventually merged with the mainstream. The fate of the staunch supporters of gangsta rap is indeed bad. SchoollyD was submerged in the long river of history early, Ice-T changed its projection horizon before it could cross the two thousand years, Soulja Slim was killed early, and ChicanoRap occupied Mexican Americans. The region's underground rap... And whether MC Ren's persistence is commendable or stupid is still unclear.
In 1998, MCRen released the album Ruthless for Life, heralding MCRen's return. The album invited a large number of artists to make guest appearances, such as Snoop Doggy Dogg, IceCube, Eightball & MJG and RBX. Although the sales volume is only slightly better than that of The Villain in Black, the album has received far better reviews than The Villain in Black - although it still has lyrics about gangsters, it is considered to be an album that represents the rebirth of contemporary veterans. This album eventually became MCRen's swan song under the Ruthless label. After that, MC Ren left the Ruthless label, which he had been loyal to for many years.
MCRen later also served as a guest, singing on Dr. Dre’s 2001 single SomeL.A.Niggaz and IceCube’s Hello. Hello, in particular, expressed his infinite nostalgia for the loss of N.W.A and Eazy-E. If West Coast gangsta rap drew national attention due to 2pac's death in 1996, only Dr. Dre could turn the spotlight back to other artists. The UpinSmoke All-Star Concert in 2000 reunited many N.W.A members and DeathRow label artists, including MC Ren. On the way to the concert, MC Ren, Dr. Dre, IceCube, Eminem, and Snoop Dogg began recording in a mobile recording studio for the return album NotTheseNiggazAgain. (Including DJ Yella who did not appear at the concert)
Collaboration and DVD (2001~2006)
In 2004, MCRen released a direct-to-DVD - LostintheGames , and released a remix album The Return of the Villain at the end of the year. Since then, MCRen has also participated in the work of Paris's Hard Truth Soldiers Vol. 1 and Public Enemy's album Rebirth of a Nation.
Retirement Rumors (2006~2008)
While people were still looking forward to MCRen, the famous political rapper Paris brought bad news in an interview with the media: < /p>
"As far as I know, MCRen has retired and will not make another full-length album. I can only invite him to sing on my album, that's all." ("MCRenisretiredandwon'tbedoingafull -lengthalbumasfarasIknow.Igetathimforverses,that'saboutit.")
MCRen delivered a speech in memory of Eazy-E on VH1HipHopHonors in 2006. Afterwards, there were rumors that MCRen would work with his long-time partners BigRocc and Long Island ( Long Beach) rapper RBX formed a group called ConcreteCriminals. Although RBX claimed that their debut album was about to be released, there was no news later. In 2007, MC Ren participated in the Gangsta Rap song Roll On ‘Em produced by DJ Crazy Tooones, and also sang with WC, Xzibit, and Young Maylay.
Return (2009~)
In 2009, eleven years after the release of the album Ruthless for Life, MCRen released his fifth solo album Renincarnated (from the word reincarnated, meaning resurrection) Transformed), released under the name of the Villain Entertainment label created by MCRen. The album will only be released as an online download, and only in the United States. The album contains two singles, "Renincarnated" and "Showtime".
On October 20, 2010, he sang the song "HaveDatMoneyRight" with ChillMC from Compton's Most Wanted and filmed the MV. The album is released by Poweof10.com.
Rap skills
Singing
MC Ren was considered the best MC during the N.W.A period - even surpassing IceCube, and was also considered the best MC in N.W.A. An underrated member because people generally didn't pay much attention to the low-key MCRen at that time. MC Ren sang the second verse of both songs Fucktha Police and Straight Outta Compton, showing his rapping skills very well.
Lyrics
After the disbandment of N.W.A, the lyrics written by MCRen in his first EP album KizzMyBlackAzz showed the seriousness and intensity of MCRen's lyrics even more than those in StraightOuttCompton. Written lyrics. The highlights of the lyrics of his first official album, Shock of the Hour, are extremely philosophical - including the cover that symbolizes the destruction of the United States in the end of the world filled with fire and the song "Attack the Babylon" that describes the final sovereignty of black people. . In the later period, it was mostly about nostalgia for the past, the memory of N.W.A and the memory of Eazy-E.
The word "Compton" appears most often in MCRen lyrics, such as "NiggasbethinkintheVillainhasstoppedgivinComptonprops/Niggayousmokinoffthatmuthafuckinstress" in "VoyageToCompton", "It'sCPTalldayhowzitgonebeniggaz?" in "CPTAllDay", "LiveFromCompton'saturdayNight'" "LivefromComptonit'sSaturdaynight/Butain'tnojoke,causeIdon'tplaythatshit" in . To a large extent, it shows MC Ren's love for his hometown, the gangster mecca of Compton. The second is Idon'tgiveafuck/Idon'tgiveadamn/...giveafuck, such as "Whoreallygivesafuck?/Causethisisruthlessforlife" in "RuthlessforLife", "You'refuckin'withtheniggaRenwiththephatshit/AndIdon'tgiveadamn" in "IDon'tGiveaDamn" (actually That's the song title).
At the same time, MC Ren also often mentions his name in his songs, such as "11:55" and "Final Frontier".
Style
MCRen is a loyal supporter of the gangsta rap style. All albums are inseparable from gangsta, including the album TheVillaininBlack which is considered to be an abuse of gangsta content. .
