Creation background

He wrote this song after a bad breakup. In 20 13, hozier was still a very lonely musician, and he often performed in the streets of Dublin at night. During this period, he created "Take Me to the Church" at his parents' home and recorded a rough sample in their pavilion.

The demo of this song attracted the attention of independent record Rubyworks, and the record company introduced it to music producer Rob Cowan. Rob Cowan thought this song was very powerful, so he recorded it for hozier.
