The history of People’s Music Publishing House

Manye Bookstore, the predecessor of People’s Music Publishing House, was born in the flames of the Anti-Japanese War. On July 1, 1938, "Wanye Bookstore" was unveiled at No. 11, Xianning Lane, Haining Road, Suzhou, Hebei, Shanghai. Since then, a publishing organization that was born in the flames of war and mainly publishes music books has developed tenaciously in the harsh environment and written a remarkable page in the history of Chinese publishing.

In Shanghai, an "isolated island" under the iron heel of the Japanese invaders, Qian Juntao, manager and editor-in-chief of Manyo Bookstore, published "Primary School Loose-leaf Songs", "Primary School Music Textbooks", and "Primary School Music Teaching Methods" that were successively put on the market. "" and "Picture Teaching Methods for Primary and Secondary Schools" cleverly infused patriotism and deeply planted the fire of resisting Japan and saving the nation in the young hearts of children. In August 1945, the Japanese invaders surrendered unconditionally. The good news of the victory of the Anti-Japanese War not only made Qian Juntao happy, but also brought new vitality to the development of Manyo Bookstore. In order to meet the needs of development, Qian Juntao boldly raised funds from the public through public offerings and changed the name of Manyo Bookstore to "Manye Bookstore Co., Ltd." In 1946, Qian Juntao invested and cooperated in opening a printing factory in Sidali, Sichuan North Road, Shanghai, to meet the increasing needs for typesetting of texts and musical notations. After the founding of New China, the printing factory moved to Beijing and formed a public-private partnership with the People's Education Press Printing Factory. In 1950, the "First National Publishing Conference" was held in Beijing. The meeting clarified the publishing guidelines, policies and directions of New China - professional publishing, overall planning, division of labor and cooperation. In view of the strengths and advantages of Manyo Bookstore, Qian Juntao happily adopted the opinion of his close friend Miao Tianrui: In the future, Manyo Bookstore should focus on publishing music books and develop into professional music publishing. Qian Juntao immediately adjusted the original topic structure, and the proportion of music books and scores increased year by year. Before the establishment of the "New Music Publishing House", more than 200 kinds of music books were published worldwide. In June 1953, the private Shanghai Music Publishing House and Educational Bookstore were merged into the Manyo Bookstore, and the private-private "New Music Publishing House" was established at No. 76, Lane 43, Nanchang Road, Luwan District, Shanghai. In October 1954, with the care and strong support of the Party and the People's Government, and through the active efforts of far-sighted people from all parties, the Publishing Department of the Chinese Musicians Association and the New Music Publishing House were established as a public-private partnership at No. 33 Gouyantou, Dongcheng District, Beijing Founded the first professional music publishing organization in my country's history - Music Publishing House (renamed People's Music Publishing House in August 1974). Zhao Feng was appointed as the first president of Music Publishing House, Sun Shen was appointed as chief editor, and Zhang Mei and Qian Juntao were appointed as deputy chief editors. Personnel, administration, and finance are under the leadership of the State Administration of Publication, and the editing and publishing business is under the supervision of the Chinese Musicians Association.

The period from 1954 to 1965 was the period of the founding and development of music publishing houses. In 1956, in order to solve the publishing needs of simplified musical notations and staffs, the first musical notation training class was held to recruit staff to take charge of the work of drawing musical notations. At the same time, a simplified musical notation typesetting institute was established and quickly put into production. In 1957, the entire organization of the society was adjusted. Sun Shen was appointed as the president and editor-in-chief, Pan Qi was appointed as the deputy president and deputy editor-in-chief, and Zhang Mei succeeded the original position; editorial offices and editorial offices for music theory, music works, foreign music, and music periodicals were established. . In 1959, due to the continuous expansion of business and the construction of "Beijing Station", the company's location was moved from No. 33 Yantou, Dongdangou, to No. 170 West Liulichang outside Hepingmen (the former site of the Commercial Press). In 1963, a music dictionary editing office was added, with He Shide as director.

In 1966, the "Cultural Revolution" occurred in our country, and the business of the music publishing house came to a halt. Afterwards, some personnel were merged into the People's Literature Publishing House (No. 166 Chaonei Street, Beijing), the organization was abolished, and a large number of personnel were sent to "cadre schools" for "reform."

In August 1974, due to the needs of my country's foreign cultural exchanges and the music and cultural life of the masses, the State Council decided to restore the music publishing system and changed its name to the People's Music Publishing House, which was under the leadership of the State Publishing Administration (directly under the State Publishing Administration after 1978) Press and Publication Administration).

In 1975, Zhou Weizhi became the leader of the social leadership group and presided over social affairs.

After the restoration of the organizational system, decentralized personnel from the "cadre school" gradually returned to the publishing house to take up their posts. The number of employees in the company increased to more than 110, and soon to more than 200. The book publishing mechanism was continuously improved, and the unique printing plant was rebuilt in 1976.

Since 1978, People's Music Publishing House has been chaired by Sun Shen, Pan Qi, Li Zhangmin, Yang Changlin, Dai Yuwu, and Zhang Zhaohua.

After the Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the publishing house entered a new period of development. With the deepening of reform and opening up across the country, the management system has transformed from a purely public institution to a public institution enterprise management, and from a pure production to a production and operation type.

In November 1983, the People's Music Publishing House building at No. 2 Cuiwei Road, Beijing was completed.

Under the guidance of the "Two Welfare" direction and the "Double Hundred" policy, the publishing house attaches great importance to both social benefits and economic benefits. Under the new situation, many internal organizations have made adjustments. They have successively established a music education editorial office, added an operation and management department, established an audio-visual center and a computer drawing center, expanded self-service distribution and established distribution outlets covering the country (more than 200 locations). Established a tape duplication factory, founded Huacai Culture Company, which mainly sells the company's book records, etc.

The journals "Music Research", "Chinese Music Education", and "Piano Art", which have had a great influence on readers, have been established and published successively.
