English name: melody death metal
When it comes to melodic death metal, we have to talk about the development history of underground metal
melodic death metal is a kind of death metal formed in the early 198s, which is obviously different from traditional death metal.
Traditional death metal generally uses the minor scale of "Phrygia", and the semitones are used more.
The melodic death metal is different. The melodic death metal originated from Northern Europe and was combined with their local Gothic music.
Their melodies were cold and fast, and the lead singer roared hysterically. Many melodies were added to the traditional death metal, which was more acceptable to the audience.
the era of soaring technology in 197s not only determined the orthodox form of heavy metals for the latecomers, but also laid the groundwork for the undercurrent of alternative metals. In fact, many restless introductions should be drawn out because of the outbreak of British punk, which symbolizes the rebellion against the orthodox heavy metal/hard rock form (from today's perspective, many hard rock bands in that era are also considered as heavy metal bands). Don't look at the surging torrent of metal in the late 197s and early 198s. Their representative bands are also contemptuous of punk who are willing to challenge the authority with anarchism and only destroy and never care about construction, but they have absorbed the elements of punk in speed, noisiness and fierceness. It is more appropriate to describe them as "they are born from the same root, so why are they in such a hurry?" After torrent metal became the mainstream in the field of heavy music (the mainstream in the commercial field is pop metal, which is two different concepts from torrent metal), other rock music which is equally heavy and intense but does not have the characteristics of torrent metal had to temporarily live underground, and they tried their understanding of heavy music other than torrent metal to the maximum extent. Here, the concept of heavy music is greater than that of metal, but of course, heavy metal is one of the more recognized ones. Therefore, it should be said that the alternative metal is the fusion or improvement of other musical elements under the framework of heavy metals, mainly in form.
as the name implies, an alternative metal does not completely follow the general formal characteristics of metal, but it has the core form of metal-heavy guitar rock (which is the essence of blues rock and hard rock as the predecessor of metal), and it cannot be easily defined as a metal with a certain exact metal style. Although judging from the form, it is easier to approach the essence of metal, if we analyze the words "connotation" or "essence" as the starting point, the differences will be even greater and more unfavorable to induction, and the formal meaning of music is greater than the connotation meaning, that is, the carrier of ideas such as lyrics can be ignored. In fact, those metals with exact styles are distinguished by their forms. That is, it can be identified by some hard indicators, such as the way of singing, the speed of playing, the presence or absence of solo, the structure of songs and so on. Therefore, bands playing the music of alternative metal are not "following the rules", and they are influenced more widely and eclectically, so it is difficult to simply classify them with hard indicators. Therefore, fans who like alternative metals are generally people who like "heavy" music, not pure metal fans (compared with fans who mainly listen to JUDAS PRIEST, IRON MAIDEN and other heavy metal music that is regarded as orthodox).
since it is an alternative metal, it is obvious that it has more considerable forms and strange sounds than it does as an orthodox metal music (a long list can be made here). For example, industrial metals, extreme metals, gothic metals, rap metals, avant-garde metals, power metals, mud metals, crazy metals, etc., can all be classified as alternative metals. But where did alternative metals start to form a force? What is the breakthrough? The answer is Grunge.
Grunge should also be split in two. The early stage means before NIRVANA became a hit, and the later stage is after Nevermind. This division is because the previous Grunge is a real alternative landscape, which cannot be defined or imitated. Almost every band has its own unique sound. To analyze their music at that time with the concept of their later generations, we can have some words: noise rock, post punk, muddy metal, alternative metal, and even some people say that some of the bands have grindcore and bad luck (late SOUNDGARDEN). Like MELVINS, ALICE IN CHAINS, TAD, L7, and even NIRVANA, there are relatively metal-biased components. For any beginner rock music lover, when the concept of form has not been fully formed, "heavy" is almost a form label for him to identify the so-called metal and nonmetal, so Grunge is a kind of heavy music and a relative of metal in a broad sense. Moreover, it paved the way for new metals to become popular later, and it was also the opener of new metals in structure.
after p>Grunge helped the alternative music to go underground and become a branch of mainstream music in the late 198s and early 199s, the alternative metal also won a wider audience of fans, and gradually became the mainstream music in the late 199s, especially after those fierce alternative metal bands made the alternative metal more standardized, modeled and regulated. However, this later alternative metal is far from the early (late 198s) alternative metal which belongs to heavy music that is more difficult to classify and has no obvious style characteristics. At that time, most of the hard-core punk bands that were still active began to shift to the metal camp, which made many underground bands that used heavy guitar timbre get new inspiration and inspiration.
The first wave of "alternative metals" involves a wide range, combining heavy metals with progressive rock (such as Jane's Addiction), garage punk/hardcore (such as early Soundgarden, Corrosion of Conformity), noise rock (such as the Jesus Lizard, Jesus and Mary Chain), crazy gram (such as Faith No More, Living Colour, Primus), hardcore and rap (such as Biohazard, Bodycount), industry (such as Ministry, Nine Inch Nails), mud metal (such as Helmet, TAD, FLOODGATE), psychedelic (such as Soundgarden, Monster Magnet) and even world music (such as late Sepultura) are all integrated, so there is no exact "alternative metal landscape", all of which are expected to break through and experiment the style limitation of classical heavy metals with instrumental performance as the absolute main line, and try new elements as much as possible. Some of these bands finally rushed out of the underground, and it was Nirvana's success that opened the Pandora's Box of Alternative Metal/alternative rock.
During 1991-1994, through Lollapalooza, an alternative metal/alternative rock music festival, those alternative metal bands gained a larger fan base, expanded their influence and popularity, and turned the performance stage into a grand exhibition of the new wave of alternative metals. Among them, the representatives and outstanding ones are the following bands: Rage Against the Machine and KORN, a very disharmonious but profound and confusing TOOL, a heavy-duty production of visual+industrial+hard core, and Nine Inch Nails, which almost squeezed into the absolute mainstream. These bands, together with the variant torrent metal band PANTERA (now we call their style metalcore), became the most influential force to the later alternative metal bands, and defined the basic style and direction of the latecomers.
in the second half of the 199s, most of the new alternative metal bands, tired of gorgeous costumes and complicated heavy metal techniques, played a hybrid music that combined simplified torrent metal, rap, industry, hardcore punk and Grunge. The above-mentioned alternative metal/rock bands were the initiators of this hybrid music. This hybrid music sounds more attractive because it is more direct, concise and aggressive in structure, and the structure inherited from Grunge makes the dynamic and static ups and downs of the song contrast greatly. It is this kind of hybrid music with great dynamic and static fluctuations that has caught the teenagers who have been hormonal for a long time and have not been attracted by mainstream metals for a long time. Therefore, this new hybrid metal (which can still be classified in the category of alternative metals) has become a new big commercial cake-they are generally called "nu-metals", just like the popular metals from the early 198s to the early 199s, they also dominated the mainstream heavy music scene for nearly 1 years from the middle and late 199s to the early 21st century. In this hybrid music, the dominant bands are Funk and Hip-Hop elements. For example, the first Rage Against The Machine that successfully grafted Hip-Hop with metal/hard core, crazy KORN, DEFTONES with introverted and melancholy temperament, Fred Durst and his LIMP BIZKIT, one of the "models" of white Hip-Hop, and the punk hip-hop metal group POWERMAN 5 from Boston. COAL CHAMBER, a visual/gothic KORN follower, KID ROCK, a rogue property owner, and LINKIN PARK. As for the tributaries of the new metal, those other metal bands with more industrial and electronic components also learned their advantages of being sweet, smooth and rhythmic in the torrent of rap metal, got rid of the shackles of being too underground and mechanical, and came to the stage, and also achieved great success, such as STATIC-X, MUDVAYNE, RAMMSTEIN, SLIPKNOT, ORGY, etc.
it is interesting, however, that, like the birth of the earliest rock music, the mainstream Rap Metal in the "new metal" was not first thought by white musicians, although the final commercial fruit was obtained by white bands (although the dominance of black music in mainstream music in Europe and America was a successful liquidation after that). "Rap Metal" is a kind of music that tries to combine hard core, rap form (more and more Hip-Hop in the later period) and riff passages which are the most offensive in heavy metal music. The earliest attempt was to combine rap with hard rock, such as Run-D.M.C and Aerosmith's re-created Walk This Way (the original was included in the 1975 album Toys in the Attic). There is "Licensed to Ill" by Beastie Boys-but the real sign of the birth of "rap metal" is the interesting single "I'm the Man" by Anthrax in 1987, in which the complete rap method is combined with the accompaniment method of metal riff for the first time. "Funk Metal" (melting the volume and riff of metal into the jumping bass line, and using a lot of syncopation and backhand rhythm) bands such as "Red Pepper", "Faith No More" and "Fishbone" also involve this style, but the hard-core tone in the rap metal that developed rapidly in the 199s is generally considered to be released in 1991. At that time, some metal bands also used hard-core rap to express their attitudes and positions in the streets of the city. After the publication of Noise, they suddenly found that it was feasible to combine metal and rap. However, the achievements of the practice in this field are not focused on the language and rhythm of rap, but on how to "speak" the lyrics smoothly with all kinds of violent "shouting" instead of the original "singing" way. Although the original soundtrack of the movie "Judgement Night", which was heavily advertised in 1993, gathered the star figures and groups in the rap and rock circles at that time, the artificial "interracial marriage" way of this record at that time failed to stay in the hearts of fans in the 199s. Roadrunner and Century Media both signed a number of rap metal bands in the mid-199s, but because of their superficial attempts in form (they didn't really integrate black music, but only borrowed rap methods), they were not forgotten by everyone in the passage of time (among them, Stuck Mojo, a band owned by Century Media, was known by some people in China and played relatively well).
In the rap metal bands that appeared in the middle and late 199s, except for Rage Against the Machine, which has a strong left-wing political tendency and is an anomaly, most of them mix the extremely aggressive and hormonal music style with the relaxed humor, introspection and anxiety that suits teenagers themselves. Some lead singers even come from broken families and are generally influenced by Hip-Hop music to varying degrees. Generally, a rap metal band in a complete sense has a lead singer who is a rapper (not necessarily black) as the core of the band. KORN and Limp Bizkit in this style became the most popular and commercially successful rap metal bands in the late 199s (Adidas brand sportswear was once the standard costume of fashionable heavy bands in China because of their endorsement). At WOODSTOCK in 1999, the new metal bands represented by KORN completely killed GRUNGE and POST-GRUNGE, which were still warm, and completed the arduous task of changing the dynasty. Later, the Family Value tour initiated by KORN once became a gold collecting basin and image promoter of new metal. After entering the 21st century, in the same style, it is the world of LINKIN PARK.
but the hodgepodge method is not a panacea. The attempt of various elements, the application of Hip-Hop, the emphasis on rhythm and light melody and solo, electronics,
