I personally feel that Liu Tao’s version of The Legend of White Snake is better.
Although Chiu Yazhi's version is said to be a classic, the performance style in which she always sings two lines and one verse is a classical musical. It feels so weird and strange, not quite. In line with the way modern people appreciate it.
And, on the other hand, one is produced by a Taiwanese company and the other is produced by our mainland company, so there are still some regional and cultural differences.
Bai Suzhen, played by Liu Tao in "The Legend of White Snake", is very expressive. Zhao Yazhi's version of "The New Legend of White Snake" was the first to take the lead and influenced an entire generation, making us accustomed to using Zhao Yazhi's appearance instead of White Snake. In Liu Tao's version of "The Legend of White Snake", people can't help but compare it, discuss right and wrong, and make judgments about which one is good and which one is bad. In fact, it’s not necessary.
No one is perfect and nothing is perfect. No matter how well written a literary work is, it cannot be completely free of time. Also as a TV series, it is almost impossible to tell a long story in just thirty episodes and to tell it clearly. Compared with the past, the plot of "The Legend of White Snake" has many deletions and changes, and naturally there are bad aspects. For example, the scene where Xu Xian and Ba Liang ran into a gangster shop after half a step of escaping, and the scene where Xu Xian was forced to get married, could have been deleted. "The Legend of White Snake" tells a poignant love story in the human world, interpreting the beauty of human relationships and the beauty of humanity; in order to better express the theme, it cannot be so-called "nonsense" and distract the audience from watching the almost funny plot.
But overall, "The Legend of White Snake" is a very good TV series. The novel concept, unique plot and boldly changed ending are a highlight. Some viewers may not understand it and think its ending is too bleak and cannot be compared with the happy ending of Zhao Yazhi's version. In fact, drama and tragedy have their similarities, but sometimes there are no strict boundaries. The difference is that comedy uses emotion to make people feel, and perfection is beauty; tragedy uses emotion to hurt people, and imperfection is beauty. Mr. Lu Xun pointed out in his article "Rediscussing the Fall of Leifeng Pagoda" that tragedy "is the destruction of valuable things in life for people to see." It can be seen that sometimes tragedy is more contagious than comedy. I would like to ask, viewers who have watched roughly 30 episodes of "The Legend of White Snake" are most impressed by the ending? That impression has been deeply implanted in my mind and is unforgettable in the emotional world.
However, some people still criticized it, saying that "The Legend of White Snake" deliberately tampered with the ending of the plot and was suspected of being malicious. This is an injustice to the screenwriter. Generally speaking, the folklore "Legend of the White Snake" was originally a beautiful story about a human being who took a different path and boldly rebelled against heaven. The White Snake is indeed the Leifeng Pagoda of Yongzhen. As Fa Hai said at the end of the play: "From now on, no non-monastics are allowed to enter within a hundred steps of Leifeng. Unless the Leifeng Pagoda falls, the West Lake will not be able to drain out." It is indeed recorded in the legend.
"The Legend of White Snake" is a success, and its success lies in all aspects. Whether it's lines, costumes, backgrounds or props, sound and light, and martial arts design, they are all very good. The symphony that is interspersed from time to time in the play exaggerates the atmosphere and effectively enhances the plot. The three theme songs at the beginning, at the end and in the film are very beautiful, and it can be seen that a lot of effort was put into it. It is true that these songs may never be as popular as the title song of "The Legend of White Snake", but this does not mean that these songs are not wonderful. In that era, the title songs of TV series from almost the same period were all very popular, such as "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", "Beijingers in New York", "Journey to the West"... and so on. Now this is very rare. For example, "Bright Sword", a TV series with high ratings, has a very good opening song. It is a real military song that sounds exciting, but it may not be very popular.
I’m afraid not many people will pay attention yet!
