Fang Yizhi, the fourth son in the late Ming Dynasty
Fang Yizhi (1611-1671) was an outstanding thinker, philosopher and scientist in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. Fang Yizhi, the former residence of Bao Fang in Tongcheng County (now Zongyang County, Anhui Province), was born in a noble family. Fang Dazhen, his grandfather, once served as Zuo Shaoqing of Dali Temple in Wanli Dynasty, and was in charge of the Book of Changes and the Book of Rites, with rich writings. Father Fang Kongying was a scholar in forty-four years of Wanli, an official in Chongzhen, and governor of Huguang. He is proficient in medicine, geography and military affairs, and has written works such as The Whole Border, Zhouyi and Biography of Ming History. Fang Yizhi inherited his family studies and received traditional Confucian education since childhood.
