On November 6, 2019, a scientific research team led by American researchers obtained the genome sequence of a new strain of HIV. The new strain was confirmed for the first time later this year.

A research paper published in the American Journal of AIDS shows that this new strain belongs to the M group of HIV-1 and is confirmed to be the L subtype. Most patients in the world are infected with HIV strains belonging to HIV-1, of which group M is the most common.
