When more and more international students go abroad to study in other places, they are adapting to exotic customs and cultures, and at the same time, security issues have gradually attracted people's attention. On June 5438+065438+ 10 this year, a couple studying in the United States were killed in their apartment, which once again triggered thinking about the safety of international students. Summarizing the security risks faced by international students in China in recent years, we find that they can be roughly divided into seven categories:
First, the awareness of self-protection is poor.
On the evening of February 26th, 200 1 Beijing time, a news from Japan shocked the Chinese people: Liu Shuqin, a junior studying in the Department of Earth Environment Science of Li Zheng University, was killed near his dormitory. According to police investigation, it was found that the neck of the deceased had been strangled by a rope, and a bicycle was placed upside down next to it. It was confirmed that the bicycle found at the scene was usually ridden by the victim Liu Shuqin himself.
This is another case in which a talented female student was killed after the unfortunate death of Han Ying last year, which deeply shocked and touched the Chinese in Japan. It is worth noting that Han Ying was chased by a strange man when she went out by bike a week before her death last year. At that time, all her friends advised her not to ride home alone at night. It was safer to take the bus. But Han Ying didn't care, just smiled and said, "It's not worth wasting a tram fare."
Experts suggest that the goal of single women becoming gangsters is an important feature of crimes in various countries, and female students studying abroad alone should pay more attention. Don't have deep contact with strangers. Try to pay attention to whether the environment is safe when you are alone, and don't go home too late. These details seem simple, but they are necessary means of self-protection.
Second, man-made disasters.
A couple from Fujian Province, China was killed in their apartment in the early morning of1October 3, US local time. 165438. According to the Overseas Chinese News, Yang Jianqing, the murdered doctoral student, was originally a master's student in the Department of Chemistry of Peking University. He went to the University of Alabama to study for a doctorate. Two years ago, he transferred to the chemistry department of the University of Arizona to continue his degree.
In the past two years, there have been frequent unfortunate incidents of overseas students in China: On May 29th, 2000, Chen Changqing and Wu Yi, Hubei couples studying at Auburn University, were hacked to death; On February 4th, 20001,Chen Shudi, a female student studying in the preparatory department of Kiev Language and Culture University, was shot and killed in Kiev, Ukraine. 200 1 18 In March, two international students aged 19 were killed in Ireland and their bodies were burnt.
Expert tip: in case of accident, you should first contact our local diplomatic agency for help; The second is to contact the local China overseas students' organizations and ask the local Chinese media to appeal in many ways, including online appeals; Third, try to hire lawyers, and you can find free lawyers through teachers or students of local law schools; The fourth is to propose high civil compensation; The fifth is to handle insurance in accordance with international practice.
Third, intermediary fraud.
In August, 2000, some high school graduates in Suzhou got the information of studying in CTL College in Cyprus from Suzhou Service Center for Going Abroad for Private Affairs. After paying a number of fees (about 6,543.8+200,000 RMB in total), in June 2000, 6,543.8+200,000 Suzhou students had a bright prospect of studying abroad.
CTL College is located in Limasso, Cyprus, a small town with few people and no business atmosphere. School space is quite "economical": the third to fourth floors of a four-story shopping mall. The college has more than 10 rooms 10 square meter, 7 teachers, and recruited more than 100 international students with great fanfare, 90% of whom are from China. Students study for half a day, and only attend classes for two weeks every month on average. For students in China, attending classes here is really "three days fishing and two days drying nets". In addition, few foreign countries promise that students can work in disguised form. Under the above circumstances, many China students spent their planned annual living expenses within half a year, mostly exceeding $5,000. What shocked the students even more was that in July this year, more than a dozen Suzhou students learned from relevant parties that the diploma of CTL College was not recognized internationally, even by the Ministry of Education of Cyprus. The so-called CTL College is completely called "diploma workshop". Suzhou students who have long doubted the quality and management of college education suddenly feel cheated and demand to return to China. Around August this year, 9 of the 12 students returned to Suzhou.
Expert tip: you must be careful when choosing an intermediary, and you must check whether the other party has the legal qualification to handle the intermediary service for studying abroad. Many intermediaries talk nonsense before handling business, so they must sign careful contracts with them so that they will not even have the opportunity to claim compensation afterwards.
Fourth, being bullied.
Last year103 at 4: 00 am, 165438, Zhang Xiaodong, who was studying in Fukuoka Institute of Computer Education, delivered newspapers as usual. At the entrance of the third building of Daitian Xinbodo Residential Building in Hakata District, Fukuoka City, he met a fat woman in her forties wearing heavy makeup. Two people entered the elevator at the same time, and the woman's head leaned against Zhang Xiaodong's shoulder inexplicably. Zhang Xiaodong thought she was drunk, afraid that she would fall and lose her dignity. She put her hand on her arm and slowly pushed her back. Who knows that on the same day, the woman I met in the elevator named Gao Song accused Zhang Xiaodong of sexual harassment. Zhang Xiaodong was taken to court. During the trial, Kao Sung was full of loopholes. For example, why didn't she go to the police station directly after being insulted, but she had to go to the newspaper to know the details of the defendant before she could report it? A foreign youth who is new here and isolated has neither knowledge of Japanese laws nor social sympathy. Did the plaintiff take advantage of this? Unfortunately, judges pay little attention to these issues.
Expert tip: Being blackmailed and "touching porcelain" because you are a foreigner is really annoying, but it is something that foreign students who have just arrived in a foreign country should beware of. Beware of those who are up to no good, and don't give them an opportunity. Of course, if it is really unavoidable, recourse to the law can also be considered. Although it is troublesome, dignity is more important than money.
Five, make friends carelessly
On September 26th, 20001year, the International Search Division of the Japanese Police Department arrested two international students from China, Li Yangming (2 1 year old) and Wang Shuai (22 years old), for robbery and homicide. They were suspected of killing Cheng Yan, a 22-year-old student studying in China, and snatched her bank card and ring on June 26th.
It is said that Wang Shuai, Li Yangming and Cheng Yan met while drinking at a party in the northeast. Li Yangming and Wang Shuai are working while going to school, and their lives are relatively embarrassing. They heard that she worked in a massage shop in Yokohama. It was estimated that she must be rich, so Wang Shuai had a bad idea. He asked Li Yangming to discuss and rob Cheng Yan. On June 26th, they came to Cheng Yan's home together. When Cheng Yan saw two friends coming, he didn't take any precautions to let them in. Unexpectedly, both of them changed their faces later. They forced Cheng Yan's bank number, and then a person looked at Cheng Yan, and a person went to the bank to withdraw 500,000 yen from Cheng Yan's deposit. When they get it, kill them.
On September 22nd, 2000, Xin Xu of Tsukuba University was killed by his classmate Xue Song. On February 26th, 20001year, the university student was killed by his classmate Han in Gangnam-CHO. On June 26th, 2006, Cheng Yan, a female student in a special school, was killed by her friends Li Yangming and Wang Shuai. 200117 Guo (30 years old), a female doctoral student in China, was strangled by a Japanese lover in Tokyo Medical and Dental University. All four cases were committed by "friends", and the cruel reality told female students abroad to be cautious in making friends.
Expert tip: You must be careful when choosing friends. Good conduct is the most important criterion, otherwise it may bring trouble or even death to yourself.
Six, do not follow the rules
In New Zealand, it is becoming more and more serious for Asian students who have no driver's license or driving experience to drive luxury cars. Two China students studying in New Zealand were deported under such circumstances.
A spokesman for the Immigration Bureau said that the authorities were considering deporting a China student aged 17, because the China student without a driver's license continued to drive despite repeated warnings from the police. Another 22-year-old China student who was considered for deportation by the Immigration Department. He only holds a driver's license in China, but he has little experience in driving on New Zealand roads.
Mike brea Breadi, spokesman for the Christchurch branch of the Automobile Association of New Zealand, said that all Asian students in the region died in car accidents because they drove too fast. He said that recently, the police stopped at a checkpoint and found six people driving at the speed of 150 kilometers per hour, which is twice the prescribed speed limit. Three of these six people are Asian students.
Expert tip: obeying local basic laws and regulations is the bottom line for Rome to do as the Romans do. It is really not worth it because of the unnecessary trouble and even danger caused by outrageous behavior.
Seven, unexpected events
At present, most people who study abroad are young people under the age of 25, and they have little experience in dealing with emergencies. Due to the turbulent factors in the world, scholars who go abroad should pay full attention to personal safety and the cultivation of their ability to deal with emergencies.
How to deal with emergencies abroad? In foreign countries, the most common accidents are traffic accidents, property losses, diseases and so on. In addition, there are ethnic riots, coups, international terrorist activities and so on. If foreign students can't handle some emergencies properly, it will often make things worse. Generally speaking, when encountering such incidents, one should be calm and calm, and the other should seek assistance in time. International students should know the emergency telephone number and contact person of the school, the alarm telephone number near their residence, the telephone number of the local embassies and consulates in China, etc. If the accident is serious, foreign students should contact the local embassies and consulates in China for help as soon as possible, and report to the local authorities for necessary investigation or assistance.
Expert tip: I would like to remind every international student that a passport is a document to prove his identity. Generally, it is required to show it when asking for help, and it must be properly kept. It is best to keep a copy of your passport with your relatives in China so that you can provide evidence for future reference when you lose it. I got this from somewhere else. I hope I can help you.
