Nine speeches by Sun Zhenyao, President of Hewlett-Packard Greater China, fifteen days after his retirement.
First of all, about work and life
I have an interesting observation. Most foreign companies are white-collar workers aged 25-35, and there are few employees over 40. Employees in foreign companies in their twenties and thirties are full of energy, but managers in foreign companies in their forties are embarrassed. Most of the 40-year-old managers I contacted in foreign companies jumped ship, and most of them finally jumped to private enterprises, such as Tang Jun. The success of employees in foreign companies is largely the success of the company, not the success of individuals. Siemens is indeed bigger than Gome, but it doesn't mean that the manager of Siemens China is better than Gome's boss, or even worse. But people who enter foreign companies often can't understand this very early, and their success is 90% due to their own ability. In fact, replacing the general manager of a foreign company in China will not have any significant impact on its performance. Well, the problem is that when these managers are over 40, their salary requirements become very high, and their talents are actually not so outstanding. As the boss of a foreign company, how would you choose? Some are smart and energetic young people who want to get ahead as long as they don't get a high salary. Some are, why do they need you?
From the above example, we can actually see our work trajectory. When I was in my twenties and thirties, my life pressure was relatively small and my health was relatively good. The parents above are healthy and there are no children below. No mortgage payments, no kids going to college. Being a small white-collar worker in a foreign company is still very glamorous, and earning a little is enough. However, people will eventually get married and have children, and they will eventually get old. 40 years old, parents are old, they need to see a doctor and take medicine, they need someone to take care of them, they need to pay off their mortgage, they need to live a basically decent life, and they need to raise their children ... What matters at that time is how much money they need to earn. Therefore, when we look at work, we should take a long-term view. It doesn't matter who is tall and who is low at the moment.
From this point of view, I don't agree to pay too much attention to the salary of the first job, and there is no need to compare the salary of the first job, which is very common among students who have just left campus. Normal people have to work for about 35 years, which is like a marathon. Different from the real marathon, there are no professionals in this competition, and everyone has only one chance. You know, there are a lot of people who can't even reach the finish line, most of them finally reach the finish line, and only a few people have crossed the finish line, so it doesn't make much sense to grab the leading position from the beginning. When I first entered the society, if I entered the top 500 companies, I would probably get a salary of 3k-6k/ month. Some people with special skills might get 8k/ month, but the question is, how much will I get after five years? It is estimated that 5k- 10k is very powerful. Although the starting point is high, the increase is limited, and the young people behind are under increasing pressure to catch up.
I asked one of my salesmen two days ago, and you learned this in two years, but the salary demanded by the newcomers is only half of yours. So what would you do?
A career is like a sports competition, including a preliminary contest, a semi-final contest and a final contest. In the preliminary round, everyone just entered the society, and most of them were people with average strength. At this time, hard work and seriousness will soon make people stand out, so some people became managers in their twenties, and some people finally won the preliminary competition and became managers in their thirties. Then it's the semifinals. Those who can participate in the semi-finals are all winners in the preliminary round. Everyone has some abilities, and intelligence is not a problem. It's not so easy to win again at this time. It is not enough to rely on a little effort and seriousness. We must have strong perseverance, know how to rely on the strength of the team, know how to conquer people's hearts, and have a long-term vision. ...
It doesn't seem easy to win the semi-final, but it's not that difficult. Because the law of this world is that while people are complacent, people who have just won the preliminary round often don't know that they have won only the preliminary round. With a little achievement, most people will become complacent and think they know everything and don't need to study hard anymore. They will think it's not their fault that they can't walk. Although they are still difficult to deal with, they have no patience, tolerance and clear long-term vision. Just like an angry bullfight, although fierce, it will eventually lose, while the winner of the rematch is as unhurried as a matador, following his own beat and slowly exhausting his opponent's patience and physical strength. After winning the semi-final, he has become a great professional manager, becoming the general manager of small and medium-sized companies and the deputy general manager of large companies, in charge of tens of millions or even hundreds of millions of businesses every year.
The final finals are coming. To tell the truth, I haven't won the final myself, so the decisive factor for the final can only rely on my own guess. At this time, winning or losing may be like what is written in martial arts novels. Everyone is an expert and can only wait for each other to make mistakes. It is impossible to beat your opponent easily. Besides doing my best, it takes a little luck and time. The laws of the world are still at work. Those who won the semi-finals are not just complacent. They often go their own way and don't listen to others. Some people become grumpy, impetuous and in poor health. Their biggest enemy is themselves. What they have to do in the final is not to be defeated by themselves, waiting for others to be defeated by themselves. This is the same as a sports competition. The competition among the top players ultimately depends on who makes fewer mistakes and who can win the final.
Third, what is a good job?
At the beginning, there was a Tang Jun in Microsoft, and many young people in universities thought this was their yearning career. The posts I posted on Tsinghua bbs were dismissed by these students. At that time, my classmates just wanted to go abroad or go to a foreign company. Now it seems that I am right. Tang Jun went to Shanda, a private company founded by Chen Tianqiao. It is the dream of many young people that a highly educated returnee gets a high salary in a top 500 company. The problem is that every year college graduates are dreaming, but there are only 500 good jobs.
People are proud and like to compare, even at work, whether they want it or not. Everyone thinks that foreign companies are very good, but what are their advantages? Ok, they are in a better office building. Is this what you want? They stayed in a better hotel on business. Is this what you want? Others will envy working in a foreign company. Is this what you want? That's all for others to see. Why do you have to live so hard to show others? On the other hand, their salary and benefits are average, but they are not particularly significant. They have fewer opportunities for promotion and it is difficult for them to be very senior supervisors. Although they hate working overtime often, they dare not stop working overtime because "if you don't do something, someone will do it". In most cases, they will look for people from Taiwan Province Province, Hongkong and Singapore to take care of you. These people often have a sense of superiority. Have you thought about it? Will the top 500 be good? What do you want or what others want to see when looking for a job?
Most of my college classmates have gone to the United States, even after graduation for so many years, and some have recently gone abroad. Is it really that good to go abroad? Most of my college classmates are still fighting for doctors, postdocs and visiting scholars. So far, only one of them has obtained a formal teaching position in an American university. Is it difficult for domestic professors? Several of my cousins have also gone abroad. Their parents are alone in China and nobody takes care of them. A few times, no one knew that someone at home had fainted. Is it really that glorious to go abroad? As someone said, "Many things are like watching porn. People who look at it feel great, but people who do it are not necessarily. "
People always want to find the best, but what is the best? Do you think it is the best, because you really know it, or because others say it is the best? Even if he is the best for others, will he be the best for you?
For what you want, you should know best, and the opinions of others are not that important. Many people are always influenced by the opinions of others, such as relatives, friends and colleagues ... The question is, whose life do you want to live? A person's life is not the sequel of his parents' life, nor the prequel of his children's life, nor the external story of his friends' life. Only you are responsible for your own life, and others can't and can't afford it. The decision I made, at least in the end, I have nothing to regret. For most people with normal intelligence, there is no big right or wrong decision. No matter what choice you make, you can try. For example, if you didn't get into the school you went to and enter the current industry, you won't be able to live in this life? Will it fail? Not exactly.
I think a good job should be one that suits you. Specifically, it should be a job that can bring you what you want. Maybe you should use this to measure your work, not the size of the company, the size of foreign companies or state-owned enterprises, whether they are famous or not, and whether there are listed companies. A small company is not necessarily a good company, and a job with more money is not necessarily a good job. You still have to figure out what you want first. If you don't know what you want, you will never find a good job, because you will always see what you can't get and what you get is unwanted.
Perhaps, the best is around you, but you haven't learned to cherish it. People always stare at what they can't get and ignore what they have got.
Verb (abbreviation of verb) job-hopping and accumulation
First of all, it should be explained that work is a rational thing, so don't play with your personality at work. Some people in the world may applaud your personality, and the telephone company of the gas company will not exempt your bill because you think you have personality. When you fire your boss in Shuai Shuai, and when you are sarcastic in the HR position, you still have to pay the bill, but you have less time to make money, and no one suffers except yourself.
I'm not against job-hopping, but job-hopping is by no means a solution to the problem. The consequence of frequent job-hopping is that people feel disloyal and unable to work with peace of mind. Nowadays, many people look for jobs online, and many job-hunting websites often give people some bad ideas. To know that they are profitable enterprises, of course, we should consider them from the perspective of their own profits. The more frequently people change jobs and look for jobs, the more prosperous their business will be, so their job is to encourage people to change jobs. So they will often tell you that your salary is less and the benefits you enjoy are worse. It is also a kind of "wage express" and a kind of "admiration for the free and unrestrained soul". As for whether it will make you uneasy, whether it will jump out of the slot to solve the problem, and whether it will be happier, it is none of their business.
There must be something wrong with job hopping. Generally speaking, when a problem occurs, it is inevitable. Many people quit their jobs because they are unhappy to some extent. If this unhappiness can't be solved in this company now, the next company probably can't solve it. You have to believe that 90% of the time, your company is not so bad, and the good company you think is not so good. As Fortress Besieged said, "People in the city desperately want to rush out, while people outside the city desperately want to rush in." Every company has its problems, and there is no company without problems. You don't even know what problems you will encounter in another environment. On the contrary, you might as well solve them now. Many problems may not be so difficult when you really want to solve them. Sometimes you think the problem can't be solved. Actually, it's just "what do you think"
The curve of life should be tortuous and upward. Occasionally, I will encounter a trough, but the general trend will always be tortuous and upward, rather than returning to the starting point forever like a pulse wave. I have met many interviewers, who are in their thirties and have four or five years of work experience, ranging from three years to 1 year at a time. In their thirties, they will go back to the starting point, starting from a junior position with a basic primary salary and competing with young people in their twenties. No. Is this life easy?
I strongly disapprove of changing industries after working in one industry for more than three years. Basically, before the age of 35, our survival capital depends on hard work, while at the age of 35, our survival capital depends on accumulation, including interpersonal relationships, experiences, contacts and word of mouth ... If we change industries frequently, it means that the accumulation for several years will be in vain, and everything must start from scratch. If you change industries twice, at the age of 35, you have accumulated less than five years, and you have not changed once. After working for 2-3 years, many people feel that their work is not smooth, as if they have reached a bottleneck and are bored, so they want to quit or even change careers. They think that all their troubles can be put aside and they will be much better. In fact, this can only make you start from scratch. There will still be the same difficulties as the original industry. After getting through it, I took a big step. You know, everyone will go through this process, and everyone will encounter several career bottlenecks. You get through it, others don't, and you're in the lead. Long-distance runners will know it's easy at first, but they will feel uncomfortable for the first time soon, but after this period, they can run for a long time, and then they will encounter discomfort for the second time. After persisting, they can run for another period, and so on, and each discomfort will be aggravated until they can't persist. Most people can't do it the first time. Some people can make it to the second time. Although everyone couldn't come for the third time, not many people came. This capital is enough for you to live a stable life.
After doing a job for two or three years, most people will be skilled. At this time, they tend to fall into constant repetition. Many people will feel bored, and some people will feel that they know everything and are too lazy to make progress. Many times, job-hopping is because I feel that I have lost interest and that I am finished. In fact, at this time, the competition has just begun. People who have worked for two or three years, whether they are customer relationships, contacts, subordinates or leaders, are not well-known in the industry ... but people who have achieved something will always feel good about themselves. Everyone feels that their relationship with customers is life and death, and they have a good reputation in the industry. In fact, it is safe to say that it is definitely not. At this time, we still have to show the enthusiasm of the previous two years, slowly and steadily, and the accumulation has just begun.
Do you know your customers well enough? Do you know what he is most worried about? Do you know your boss well enough? Do you know what he is most worried about? Do you know your people well enough? Do you know what he is most worried about? If you don't know, what makes you feel that you have accumulated enough? If you don't understand, how can you ask them to help you and do what you want them to do? How can you succeed if they don't do what you want them to do?
Seven, into the right line and the right person
In China, there are probably very few people who finish the work. Nevertheless, there are still some things to pay attention to in the first job. Two things are particularly important. The first thing is to enter the industry, and the second thing is to talk to people. The biggest impact of the first job on people is to enter the industry. The modern division of labor has been very detailed. Basically, you can only become an expert in one industry, but you can't become an expert in multiple industries. Many cases also prove that even if a person is very successful in one industry, going to another industry is often not the case at all. "Do you want to change the world or sell soda for life?" Did Jobs invite John, the president of Pepsi? What Scully said when he joined Apple turned out that John, who was very successful at Pepsi, was mediocre at Apple. In fact, no industry is particularly good, and no industry is particularly bad. It may be reported that the average wage in any industry is relatively high, but what they didn't say is that the average pressure in that industry is also relatively high. Once the industry that looks beautiful enters, it is found that many places are not so perfect, but outsiders can't see them.
To tell the truth, I didn't make a fortune myself, so my advice is just to make people work happily, not how to make a fortune. We only discuss the situation of ordinary migrant workers. I don't think it matters much what industry you choose. You can't just look at the present. For example, since the previous year, the state began to rectify the medical industry, many pharmaceutical companies could not continue to operate, and the sales of many pharmaceutical industries began to change careers. In fact, the depression of the pharmaceutical industry is aimed at all companies, not one company, and everyone's life is hard. It is very uneconomical to escape at this time. Most regular pharmaceutical companies can last for two or three years even if they don't do new business, and most pharmaceutical sales can last for two or three years by salary. The country can't hold on to the pharmaceutical industry forever. After two or three years, things will always get better. At that time, everyone else ran away and you didn't. At that time, it was dark. Sometimes I feel that my industry is dying. The problem is that the industry that no longer dies has become a good industry with fewer people. When everyone is in a bad mood, it is often the best time. Everyone thinks that the financial industry is good and the threshold of the financial industry is high. How many people have to sharpen their heads before they can enter, compete and encourage, and always be on guard after entering. An oversight was pushed out by later generations, and the pressure was enormous. How can we talk about happiness? Not necessarily a "good" job.
Solar energy has not yet entered the practical application stage, but seven companies related to solar energy in China have been listed on NYSE. Gome Suning Yongle is actually a trading enterprise and can also be listed. Lutai Textile's profit has increased by more than 50% in a row 10, and everyone who sells tea and clothing can go public ... In fact, it really doesn't matter what industry to choose, the key is how to do it. Everything is done by people, and the key is people.
One thing to remember is that in this world, until the foreseeable future, there will always be a few successful people, a few rich people, and most people are average, ordinary and not very successful. Therefore, most people's practices and opinions are often not the closest to success. Therefore, what most people say is not good, and what most people say is not bad. Most people go to the stock market, and it is only a matter of time before they fall. The more enthusiastic they are, the closer they fall. When most people buy a house, the house price will not rise, but when the house price rises almost, most people start to buy a house. There will be no such thing as making everyone successful and rich, which has never happened in history and will never happen in the future. Some things, even if they are lucky for a while, will be left elsewhere at other times.
At the beginning of their career, young people should pay special attention to doing the right thing, and don't let their lives be spent in fear for decades to come, let alone lose their youth for a job. My company is an unscrupulous company. Many people didn't understand it before, even their own employees didn't understand it. But now, we are the largest enterprise in the industry, and our customers are willing to deal with us, especially the national crackdown on corruption. Everyone knows our reputation of not giving money in business and dares to do business with us. Companies that are brave enough to give money have either closed down or run away, or they can't sleep well every day. People still have to look at the long term. Many times, the seemingly shortest road is actually the farthest road, and the seemingly farthest road is actually the shortest road.
Being with the right person means being with a good leader and a good teacher after entering the business. People who have just entered the society often have no experience in doing things and need someone to set an example. Good leadership is very important for a person's development. The so-called "good" standard is not that he asks you to work less and get more money, but the following three.
First, a good leader should have a broad mind. If a leader loses his temper every day, it is almost certain that he is not a broad-minded person. Leaders who can lose their temper but don't lose their temper are mostly powerful leaders. The biggest problem for China people to be leaders is that they can't tolerate people who are better than themselves. So we can often see a phenomenon that leaders are very capable, and there are a group of mediocre people or a group of idle people below. If you see such an environment, you'd better not go.
Secondly, leaders should be willing to think from the perspective of subordinates, which can actually be found in the interview. If leaders always think from their own point of view and hardly listen to you, it will be dangerous. Considering a problem from the perspective of a subordinate does not mean agreeing with what the subordinate says, but he must understand the position of the subordinate and why he thinks so before he can convince you. Leaders who only care about what they think are often difficult to win the conviction of their subordinates.
Third, leaders dare to take responsibility. When something happened, they pushed the responsibility down and took the credit for themselves. Such leaders don't follow. Choose a leader, choose a leader who can stand up at a critical moment and pay for the mistakes of his subordinates, because this is his responsibility as a leader.
Maybe you won't meet a good leader, because the leader in China is often the leader whose ass decides his head. Because he takes the leadership position, his words are more reasonable. This is a misunderstanding of the traditional concept of official position. There may be many such ignorant and incompetent leaders, but it is actually good for you. If you want to surpass him one day, do you want him to be smarter or more stupid? Relatively speaking, such a leader is actually not difficult to get, but you have to put your figure down. Get to know more people, deal with people who are better than you, and find good teachers. Don't blame the society and the boss with a group of people who are equally depressed. This won't help you at all, it will only make you more negative. Deal with people better than you, see what they think and do, learn from them, and then deal with people better than you.
Eight, choose
What we do most every day is actually choice, so we have to mention this topic when talking about our career.
I have always believed that, to a large extent, what kind of people we will become depends on ourselves. Every day, we make all kinds of choices. I don't have to write this article, don't pat bricks in other people's posts, or I can write these words to help others while sorting out my own ideas. I can pay more attention to the format to make it easy for others to read, or I can write a bunch. I can post it like this, or I can read it before posting it. You can choose to go to the interview without shaving, or you can choose to look in the mirror before going out ... every day, every moment, we are making such and such decisions. We can be careless or pay more attention. Thousands of small choices add up and ultimately determine what kind of people we are.
In a sense, our future is not given by others, but by our own choice. Many people will say that I am unlucky and have no choice. If you think "going to Microsoft or IBM", "going to Tsinghua or Peking University" and "being the vice president of sales or the factory director" is a choice, then you really have no choice, and most people have no choice. But every day, you can choose whether to serve customers more thoughtfully, whether to be more patient with colleagues, whether to do your work more carefully, whether to understand the situation more clearly, whether to clarify unclear issues again ... You can also choose whether to persist in pain, whether to abandon negative thoughts, whether to forgive a person's mistakes, and whether to believe what I wrote here. Don't make the same mistake again ... life gives you a choice every day and an opportunity to change your life every day. You can choose to lie on the ground and roll, or you can choose to stand up with your teeth clenched. You always have a choice. Some choices are not immediate and need to be accumulated. For example, farmers can choose to water their land often, or they can choose to let God water them. It is true that if you water today, the seedlings may not grow immediately, but if you water often, most seedlings will eventually grow. If you don't water it, the harvest will be very bad.
Life gives you opportunities every day. He won't give you a pile of cash or a good job, but he is still giving you a chance. My family is an ordinary family, and there is not much social relationship. My father was assigned to the frontier after graduating from college. There is only one road in that small county. In fact, their generation has more reason to complain than we do. They got nothing. When they were young, they didn't have to read any books during the Cultural Revolution, and supported the frontier to jump the queue and settle down. When they are old, they must give young people a chance. He has every reason to sit there and complain about his untimely life like thousands of young people. However, ten years after being assigned to the frontier, the country resumed recruiting graduate students and he returned to his original school. After graduating from graduate school, he was assigned to a small unit in Anhui Province. Three years later, the country enrolled doctoral students for the first time. He returned to his old school and became the first generation of doctors in China. He was older than I am now. Life has not given up on him, nor has he given up on life. After waiting for 10 years, he made his own choice, he didn't give up, he didn't break the jar, so the time came, and he changed his life. What kind of person you will eventually become depends on every small choice you make.
What do you choose to believe? Who do you choose to make friends with? What do you choose to do? What do you choose to do? ..... We are faced with too many choices, and among these choices, the choice of ideological level is far more important than the choice of objective conditions. For example, it is not so important to choose what products to make, but what is important. It doesn't matter who you choose to use, what matters is how you choose to bring these talents. Many times, it is not important to choose objective conditions. Regarding the choice of objective conditions, there is mostly no right or wrong. What matters is how you choose to do it. After graduating from college, it doesn't matter if you want to go to Microsoft, sell pork, start a business or play substitute games, as long as it doesn't violate the law and harm people. What matters is how to do things well after choosing.
Besides these, you can also choose the time and environment. For example, you can choose to put the biggest difficulty in life when your physical strength and energy are the most abundant, or you can wait until you are 40 years old. Only when you are in your forties is the most fragile time in your life, with the old and the young. If I had encountered a career crisis at that time, it was really a very distressing thing. Instead of this, it is better to eat bitterness in your twenties and thirties, so that you can live calmly when you are fragile. You can choose to grow up in a greenhouse, or you can choose to hone in the wild. You can choose to work in the office and blow air conditioning, or you can choose to meet customers at a high temperature of 40 degrees. However, all this will eventually accumulate and guide you to the future you deserve.
I dare not say that you have a choice in everything, but you have a choice in most things, but you often don't regard it as a choice. Take every choice seriously and you will have a better future.
Because I feel that it is also a trend that men and women don't look at age in society now. They think that true love has no age and no age limit. Therefore, they bravely
