The name of Yuan Shi Fan was originally derived from the family instructions before the Song Dynasty. Although there were a lot of them, most of them intended to be "standard" rather than "popular customs". However, Yuan Cai's family precepts, contrary to his predecessors, are intended to "teach customs". Therefore, after the book was completed, he named it "Popular Training", which clearly expressed the purpose of the book "the custom of being kind and beautiful".

Later, Yuan Cai invited Liu Zhen, his classmate and friend, to make a preface to his family instruction. Liu Zhen talked about Yuan Cai's book in the preface, "Its words are precise and detailed, but its meaning is sincere and wronged. If you learn to do it, you can really make a trip for filial piety, loyalty and forgiveness, and kindness."
