A thousand-character essay is one of the three major reading materials of traditional Mongolian studies. Poems of a Thousand Families is a combination of Xie Fangde's Redefining Poems of a Thousand Families (all seven-character poems) in the Song Dynasty and Five-character Poems of a Thousand Families selected by Wang Xiang in the Ming Dynasty. It is an anthology of poems with enlightening nature in old China. Because most of the poems it selected are famous works of Tang and Song Dynasties, which are easy to learn and understand, and the themes are diverse: pastoral scenery, sending friends to farewell, homesickness, mourning for the past, chanting things and paintings, and catering, which widely reflect the social reality of Tang and Song Dynasties, so they are widely circulated among the people and have a far-reaching influence. The book has 22 volumes and recorded 1281 poems, all of which are metrical poems and quatrains.

Although it claims to be a thousand, there are actually only 122 Poems of a Thousand Families. Divided by dynasties: 65 in Tang Dynasty, 52 in Song Dynasty, 1 in Five Dynasties, 2 in Ming Dynasty, and 2 anonymous authors who can't find out the age. Among them, Du Fu, with 25 poems, followed by Li Bai, with 8 poems. The poetess only chose two four-line poems by Zhu Shuzhen in Song Dynasty.

Modern people often refer to "3 Qian Qian", that is, The Classic of Three Characters, Hundreds of Family Names, Thousands of Words and Poems of a Thousand Families. Among them, "Poems of a Thousand Families" was a popular reading for children in Ming and Qing Dynasties. It was favored by readers from the beginning, and the title of "Thousand Poems" was widely adopted. For example, there were thousands of poems in the Qing Dynasty and continued thousands of poems in the Republic of China, and there were thousands of poems in the Guanting Lake, Lingnan Thousand Poems, Contemporary Jiangsu Thousand Poems, Five Dynasties Thousand Poems, and contemporary ones.
