On December 9, 2020, Chongyang County United Xinhua Bookstore’s activity of sending books to five groups of disabled people in Datang Village attracted widespread attention from all walks of life and spread widely online. It received many comments, forwards and likes from netizens. This event is very meaningful and I believe more people will join the team to help people with disabilities. So how should we help people with disabilities?

First, respect each other and don’t hurt their self-esteem.

When people interact with each other, the most important thing is mutual respect. As disabled people are a vulnerable group in society, we should help them. We cannot stand by and watch. We should take the initiative to care about them and become friends with them instead of looking at them with colored eyes. In recent years, the country has vigorously supported the employment of people with disabilities and provided jobs for many people with disabilities, so that they can also rely on own efforts. So we need to pay attention to how we help people with disabilities. It is better to teach a man to fish than to teach him to fish. Help is not charity.

Second, help with sincerity.

Honesty and trustworthiness are the most basic principles for people to do things. Our help to people with disabilities should be sincere, not superficial. Some people in some institutions use the slogan of helping to make a lot of money, but do not allow people with disabilities to receive the help they deserve. We should pick up our compassion and sincerely care for them. You can close the door for them when you get on the elevator, extend your hand when you go up the steps, any small help you can give them is warmth to them, and care is often reflected in the details.

Third, don’t discriminate and don’t deliberately help.

In fact, people with disabilities are also very eager to be independent. They also want to contribute to society and not be dependent. Therefore, we can provide them with some suitable jobs to make them self-sufficient, and all those who work hard deserve to be recognized. Let go of your stature, let go of your arrogance, and don't discriminate. This is the greatest help to them.
