1In the spring of 894, the "East Learning Party" uprising broke out in North Korea, requesting the Qing government to send troops to help suppress it. Japan, which had already planned to invade China, also took the opportunity to send troops. On July 25th, the Japanese navy attacked the escort ships and troop carriers in southern China near Toyoshima, North Korea, and started a war.
The war lasted more than eight months. After several battles, the battlefield constantly changed between land and sea, and the war burned from abroad to home. 1894, 17 In September, the Japanese army provoked a naval battle in the Yellow Sea in Dadonggou waters.
In nearly five hours of fighting, beiyang fleet was sunk by four warships, with nearly 1,000 casualties. No Japanese warship was sunk, only 298 people were killed or injured.
In the naval battle, the hull of Zhiyuan Ship commanded by Deng Shichang was injured in many places, and it was in danger of sinking at any time. When he found that the flagship Zhiyuan ship of Beiyang Navy was besieged by the Japanese fleet, he ordered Zhiyuan ship to hit Yoshino, the main force of the Japanese army, with full horsepower.
He encouraged the officers and men of the whole ship: "Our generation joined the army to defend the country and put life and death at risk. Today, there is only death! " Unfortunately, Zhiyuan was hit by a Japanese torpedo and sank. Of the more than 240 officers and men on board, only 7 were rescued.
After Deng Shichang fell into the water, his men gave him the lifebuoy, but he refused. His dog Sun fell into the water with him and bit his arm, trying to rescue his master. Deng Shichang held back his inner pain, put his hand on Sun's neck and sank into the waves of the Yellow Sea with him. It was Deng Shichang's 45th birthday.
