According to the historical book A Brief History of Tongzhi Clans in Qing Dynasty and Manchu Eight Banners' Surnames, Bilan, also known as Bila's and Biliyang's of Manchu, originated from Bilan's department of the ancient Jurchen nationality in the Jin Dynasty, with Bilahala as Manchu, which means "river" in Chinese, and lived in Heyou (now Wusuli River flows into the mouth of Heilongjiang) and Changbai Mountain. After many coronations, the Han surnames are Bieshi, Heshibi and Shi Yang.
