2. Urumqi is located in the northwest of China, in the hinterland of Eurasia and adjacent to Central Asian countries. Known as the "Asian Capital", it has been an important hub for exchanges between the East and the West since ancient times. Today, it is a big city (2,500 kilometers), the most inland city in the world and the farthest from the ocean and coastline.
Urumqi has a long history. As early as the Neolithic Age, human beings lived here. 1763, Qianlong expanded and built the city, calling it Dihua. Dihua became the capital of Xinjiang province from 65438 to 0884, and has since become the political center of Xinjiang. 1954, Dihua changed its name to Urumqi. Urumqi is a multi-ethnic city with 13 indigenous peoples and 49 ethnic minorities.
