The name "Hefei" first appeared in Biographies of Historical Records and Huo Zhi by Sima Qian, a great writer and historian: "Hefei was affected by the tide of the north and south, and leather, abalone and wood were lost." During the Qin and Han Dynasties, Hefei officially established "Hefei County", which belonged to Jiujiang County.

In the Eastern Han Dynasty, Liu Xiusheng made Hefei a vassal state, and in the Three Kingdoms period, it was ruled by Yangzhou, which was called "Hefei", also known as "Golden Fight".

The Southern Liang Dynasty called it "Ruyin";

After the Sui Dynasty, it was changed to "Luzhou";

After the liberation of Hefei, the county set up a city. Three years later, the Anhui Provincial People's Government was formally established and stationed in Hefei.
