The Origin and History of Nanjing General Temple and Model Road
Matai Street was originally a small street.

Mr. Chen, an expert in Nanjing local chronicles, said that in 200 1 year, the city * * * invested to broaden this road. In 2002, the nearby Jiangjun Temple was also merged into this street, and the scope of Matai Street only started from Hunan Road in the south and reached the new model road in the north.

Speaking of the history of Matai Street, we have to mention Jiangjun Temple and Longcang Lane, which are part of Matai Street.

According to Mr. Chen's memory, during the Ming Dynasty, the local people built a temple in the northwest of Gulou District, in which there was a statue called General Ma.

It is said that this general Ma was a general who fought for Zhu Yuanzhang in the Ming Dynasty. General Ma always loves the people as much as his son. After his death, in order to commemorate the general, there was another street called Longcang Lane, which was separated from the General Temple.

The locals borrowed the place name of General Ma Temple and called it General Temple to suppress the black dragon across the street.

Today, the temple of the General Temple has long since disappeared, and the street of the General Temple has only left the street name because it was merged into Matai Street.

But the stories of General Temple and General Ma remain in the memory of local people.
