Danyang has a long history and culture since ancient times. This is not only the hometown of Qi Liang, but also one of the cradles of Wu culture. Now Danyang is the largest lens production base in the world, and is known as "the hometown of glasses in China". Its scenic spots include Jiuli Scenic Area, Wanshou Pagoda, ji zi Temple and Tiandi Stone Carving Garden.

People came to Danyang from the Neolithic Age and set up a city in the Warring States Period. When Qin unified the six countries, it was renamed Qu County. It was not until the first year of Tianbao in the Tang Dynasty that Danyang County was said. Although it has been used up to now, Danyang was removed from the county and set up as a city in 1987, which belongs to Zhenjiang.
